Dear Gened Folks, Inquiry group #5 (well, Reid, Larry, and myself)
met yesterday to try to hammer down our final thoughts regarding the
list of goals and objectives. The discussion was productive. We
have been (and still are) impressed with the work of Inquiry Group #8
(Todd Grantham's group) and the discussion centered around "fine
tuning" their effort. We believe that their list is sound, but felt
that one more idea should be added as Objective # 7. We are not
quite sure how to phrase this last objective, however, our feeling is
that many of our students leave the college not as "engaged citizens
of the world" as we had hoped. In fact many leave unable to handle
the practical matters of daily life and incapable of setting life
goals for themselves. Therefore we feel that an objective should be
added which would say something to the effect (now this is rough,
mind you): "To promote and encourage the ability to set and achieve
goals and to integrate and connect knowledge and ideas for practical
use." Admittedly, this still needs some work, but we are hoping that
maybe some other groups can help us with this. Thanks. Martin Jones
