Inquiry Group # 6 began their meeting, Friday, by discussing the differences between an educated person and a liberally educated person. Our group would be interested in comments from other groups on this topic.
The group's definition of an educated person was examined in relation to the General Education Goals and Objectives. After much discussion, we placed the goals and objectives into the three categories suggested by Group 7. Goals 1, 2, and 7 were placed in the Skills category. Goal 3 was the only goal in the Knowledge category, since we placed Goals 4,5,and 6 in the Values category.
In looking at each individual goal, we suggest some changes. Instead of "To develop global awareness" for Goal 5, we propose, "To develop an understanding of the global environment--past, present, and future." We felt that this goal could be reworded to address the physical earth. As rewritten, the goal would fit into both the Knowledge and Values categories.
While discussing Goal 6 - "To develop an appreciation of cultural diversity", we came to the conclusion that this goal also could be reworded. Our suggestion is: "Goal 6 - To develop an appreciation of one's role in the local, national, and global communities." This goal would address history, social sciences, and the humanities.
With Goal 6 rewritten, we would add a new Goal 7 to address an international perspective. This goal would read, "To develop a community perspective--local, national, and international." The current Goal 7 would be moved to Goal 8.
We are interested in feedback from other groups on our suggestions for Goals 5 through 7.
