Inquiry group #7 met on October 15, 1996 and discussed the suggestions made by inquiry group #8. Based on these discussions we would like to recommend the following list of gened goals and objectives.

1. To develop reading, writing and oral communication skills

2. To develop critical thinking and problem solving skills and to provide training in the methods of scholarly research. (We are assuming that scientific research is included in scholarly research.)

3. To develop human relation skills and the ability to work with others. (We recommend reinserting a rewording of the original number 7 because of the importance of developing these skills for today's world).

4. To develop, through a strong core curriculum, basic knowledge in the liberal arts and sciences. (We are assuming that the humanities, arts, mathematics and the sciences are included in the liberal arts and sciences. This wording has the advantage of being less wordy and of referring back from our gened goals to the College's statement on liberal arts and sciences.)

5. To introduce students to the political, social, economic and scientific issues of the past, present and future. (We recommend a perspective beyond just the present.)

6. To help students understand and respect people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and to encourage development of a global outlook.

7. To encourage intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning.

We have reorganized these goals according to whether they are addressing skills, knowledge, or values. We view 1-3 as being primarily aimed at skills, 4-5 as addressing knowledge, and 6-7 as addressing values.
