Report of Inquiry Group 1:
Thanks in part to Todd Grantham's email on values education,
Group 1 agreed to disagree on this issue at length. We decided
at our first meeting, on Jan. 15, 1997, to produce wording for
Knowledge and Skills goals before tackling values. In fact we
had a hearty discussion of values when a member proposed that
setting and achieving goals should be included as a skill of an
educate person. Here, therefore, are our K and S goals. We
didn't get to values.
K-I
To acquire basic knowledge of the arts, humanities, mathematics,
and the natural and social sciences, the languages which define
and convey this knowledge, and the relationships among these
branches of knowledge.
K-II
To develop an understanding of economic, ethical, philosophical,
political, scientific and social issues -- their origins and
implications.
K-III
To acquire understanding of the diversity of cultures, the
natural world, and their relationships.
S-I
A liberally educated person should be able to communicate
effectively, orally and in writing, in English and another
language
.
S-II
A liberally educated person should be skilled in the methods of
scholarly inquiry, including critical thinking, problem solving,
scientific research, and historical perspective.
S-III
A liberally educated person should be able to acquire information
from a multiplicity of sources.
S-IV
A liberally educated person should be able to work effectively
with others. [some members disagreed with the implication that
such a person should work effectively with others, but consented
with the inclusion of "should be able to," i.e., the values
things again.]
S-V (nonconsensual)
A liberally educated person should be able to set and achieve
goals, and to integrate and connect knowledge.
We had a good time, and hope our other members come back.
