Geneders, Inquiry Group #5 met today to discuss the results of the "Mixed-group goal statement exercise" at the January GenEd forum. Realizing that a much more difficult discussion will be taking place in the future as to how to achieve these goals, we opted for simplicity. Therefore under the "Knowledge" heading we chose the synopsis provided by K-4 and under the heading "Skills" we chose S-3's (see Reports of Mixed Groups). The discussion of the "Value" heading dominated much of our discussion and we finally decided that "teaching values" might well be a tricky and undesirable goal (although the group was not unanimous on this issue). We decided finally that through the process of obtaining knowledge and thinking critically about value systems that the "goal" of value system would be part of the training, but that each student would be encouraged to rationally seek and support their own such system. We eliminated the "Value" heading from the goal list, while recognizing that we will probably continue to discuss this issue in future meetings. Martin Jones
