Group 9 offers the following comments regarding the proposed new goal
statements.
RE: #1: While the current curriculum adequately support goal 1 up to the
last comma, it does not adequately support the acquisition of a knowledge
of the relationship among the branches of knowledge.
RE: #2: The current institutional structure does not support the
acquistion of interdisciplinary understanding.
RE: #3: Pockets of support exist for #3 (e.g. Religious Studies and
Theater). In the current distribution of minimum degree requirements there
is no way for all students to meet #3.
RE: #4 English and foreign languages adequately support the development
of effective reading, writing and oral communication skills.
Other departments bear the responsibility of addressing the goal also;
however, neither the resoruces nor the will are present to address this
responsibility.
RE: #5: The current curriculum adequately supports goal # 5.
RE: #6: The current curriculum adequately addresses this goal. The
library provides resources which enable student to meet this goal through
their coursework in virtually every discipline.
RE: #7: Through extracurricular activities and academic advising and
cournseling this goal is adequately meet.
RE: #8: Some disciplines address this goal directly through their
coursework (e.g. music, theater, natural sciences); others support it
through student organizations that they sponsor; student government,
athletics and other student organizations support this goal.
RE: #9: Current curriculum and extracurricular activities (e.g. Honor
Court, Cougar Pause, etc.) address this goal.
