Medical First Responder certification is an entry level certification in the field of pre-hospital medicine. Our training program follows the guidelines as set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation. One First Responder class is offered each fall . Those selected for the class receive the training at no charge with the agreement to work with the College of Charleston EMS for one semester.
Emergency Medical Technician training follows the guidelines of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC). The 140-hour curriculum teaches basic life support, advanced airway, and other life--saving procedures. EMT courses are now conducted on the College of Charleston campus through a partnership with Lowcountry Regional EMS.
Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator
The safe operation of unit equipment is always at the forefront of EMS personnel. CEVO 3: Ambulance is a training program designed to increase driver safety and awareness. This course is required by many agencies before someone is able to operate an emergency vehicle.
In-Service Training Program
The College of Charleston EMS provides in-service training for its personnel every month. Previous topics have included: diabetic emergencies, patient assessment, entrapment, Blood-borne pathogens, Trauma, altered mental status, and many more. In-Service training is conducted in-house or with other local agencies as the topic warrants.
