In this colloquium, Dr. Don Edwards of the Statistics
Department at the University of South Carolina will discuss his recent water quality
research. Seven measures of water quality have been collected at 55
monitoring sites in the National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) via
autosamplers every half-hour since 1996. With the ultimate purpose of
obtaining a better understanding of the nature and causes of hypoxia (lack of
dissolved oxygen), the immediate challenge is to quantify and compare the
periodicity due to tidal and solar forcing functions in each of these 385
time series. In this seminar, Dr. Edwards
will discuss (1) interactive graphical tools he has developed for examining
these huge time series; (2) traditional harmonic regression approaches to the
analysis; and (3) new approaches based on nonparametric and semiparametric
regression. This is joint research with Dr. Elizabeth Wenner and Fred Holland of the SC Department of Natural Resources. |
