January 9	MES Orientation
Wednesday	Institute Conference Room	4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
	This orientation gives incoming MES Students a chance to meet their fellow first-year students and to meet with Faculty and Staff. Additional information is provided about the MES Program, and students will have a chance to ask any questions they may have.

	Denny Ciganovic, from Career Services, will present MES Students with information on how to conduct a successful career search, emphasizing the tools and resources that are available.
February 1	Research Colloquium - Water Quality
Friday	Lightsey Center, Room B08	1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
	In this colloquium, Dr. Don Edwards of the Statistics Department at the University of South Carolina will discuss his recent water quality research. Seven measures of water quality have been collected at 55 monitoring sites in the National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) via autosamplers every half-hour since 1996. With the ultimate purpose of obtaining a better understanding of the nature and causes of hypoxia (lack of dissolved oxygen), the immediate challenge is to quantify and compare the periodicity due to tidal and solar forcing functions in each of these 385 time series. In this seminar, Dr. Edwards will discuss (1) interactive graphical tools he has developed for examining these huge time series; (2) traditional harmonic regression approaches to the analysis; and (3) new approaches based on nonparametric and semiparametric regression. This is joint research with Dr. Elizabeth Wenner and Fred Holland of the SC Department of Natural Resources.

	What can you do with a degree in Environmental Studies? People currently working in a variety of environmental careers will speak about what they do and answer questions about what you can do, too.
February 13	Race, Law and the Politics of Hope
Wednesday	Physicians Auditorium	4:00 p.m.
	This year's Political Science Department Convocation features Barack Obama, who will be speaking on "Race, Law and the Politics of Hope." Mr. Obama is currently an Illinois State Senator and a practicing civil rights attorney in Chicago, specializing in voting rights, discriminatory hiring practices, and fair housing litigation. Mr. Obama also teaches civil rights law at the University of Chicago Law School.
February 21	Art, Institutional Theory, and the Appreciation of Nature
Thursday	Simmons Center for the Arts, Rm. 309	3:15 p.m.
	Allen Carlson, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alberta, will speak on Aesthetics and Environment. Dr. Carlson’s teaching and research interests include aesthetics, environmental philosophy, and especially environmental and landscape aesthetics. He recently published Aesthetics and the Environment: The Appreciation of Nature, Art and Architecture (Routledge, 2000).
April 5	MES Research Colloquium
Friday	Institute Conference Room	11:30 a.m.
	The Environment and the Workplace: Everybody Works in the Environment in Industry
	In this colloquium, Dr. Wilson Gautreaux, from MeadWestvaco in Charleston, will speak about the the role of environmental studies in the corporate world. In particular, he will address his and other environmental workers' role in the private sector industry.
