Hall Jamieson, the College of Charleston Convocation Speaker,
is scheduled for 11:15 a.m., and is open to all MES and MPA students.

are the root causes of natural-resource degradation in the Third
World?
Presented
by Marcela Rabi, recently of PADCO (Planning and Development Collaborative
International), this seminar will present a documentary film, “Banking
on Disaster”, about the destruction of the Amazonian rainforest
as a consequence of paving a road through the heart of the world’s
largest rainforest in Brazil, a project partly financed by the World
Bank.

National Laboratory, will present a workshop on Energy Policy.
In addition to discussing conventional energy resources,
he will talk about fuel cells, wind, tidal, geothermal and solar.
Come learn more about issues such as nuclear waste storage, and the battle in South Carolina over plutonium
shipments to the Savannah River Site!
This
workshop will take place at the Lightsey Conference Center, located
on the College of Charleston campus on Calhoun Street, between St.
Philip and Meeting Street, and marked as Building #3 on this

Oyster Roast! The Roast is sponsored by MESSA and will be held
at the Dixie Plantation, where there are forested trails to explore
and a small boat dock where you can watch the sunset. There will
be plenty of oysters, burgers, salads, and desserts, so bring your
friends, family, and co-workers to join us for local oysters and
lots of fun.

by Marcela Rabi, this workshop will address the critical struggle
of trade and the environment, an issue pervading all policy areas
of domestic and international environmental protection. What is
the WTO? What challenges does it face? Three trade and environmental
case studies will be presented as examples of how the growing movement
to promote free trade can clash with environmental protection.
You
are encouraged to visit the Trade
and Environmental Database (TED), a unique inventory of the
impacts of trade and environment, culture, and a variety of other
issues.
