This orientation gives incoming MES Students a chance to meet their fellow first-year students, some faculty members, and representatives from MESSA (the MES Student Association). Additional information is provided about the MES Program, and students will have a chance to ask any questions they may have.

Be part of South Carolina's solution to waterway pollution. Beach Sweep is a state program that has a large positive effect on aquatic pollution. Join MESSA and numerous other Charleston area groups on Saturday, September 18th at 9:00am for Beach Sweep. Email MESSA Volunteer Coordinator Sarah Griffin for more information or directions.

Energy – It's No Free Lunch!

Dr. Sy Baron, former Associate Director at Brookhaven National Laboratory, will present a workshop on Energy Policy. In addition to discussing conventional energy resources, he will talk about fuel cells, wind, tidal, geothermal and solar power. This will be a lively seminar, particularly addressing oil issues and the proposed hydrogen cycle and hybrid cars.

This workshop will take place at the Tate Center, room 304. The Tate Center is located on the College of Charleston campus at the corner of Liberty and St. Philip Street, and is marked as Building #89 on this map.

Oyster Roast

Bring out those oyster knives and gloves, because it’s time for the Annual MES Oyster Roast!

The Oyster Roast is sponsored by MESSA, and will be held at the Dixie Plantation, where there are forested trails to explore and a small boat dock where you can watch the sunset. With live music, food, beer, and, of course, oysters!, this will be a great opportunity for faculty, students, friends, family, and co-workers to join together for lots of fun.

The MES Oyster Roast uses local oysters, and the oyster shells are donated to SCORE and the SC Department of Natural Resources for oyster habitat restoration.

Each semester, MESSA helps with Charleston Habitat for Humanity by assisting in building affordable homes for families in need. You may be involved with any step in the construction including roofing, siding, painting, or even installing windows. C'mon out on Friday, October 29th to help!

MESSA Fall Camping Trip
Colleton State Park  

Make your plans for the MESSA Fall Camping Trip at Colleton State Park, only an hour from Charleston. Family, friends, and pets are welcome. The campground includes restroom facilities with hot showers. This 35-acre park is located on a portion of the Edisto River that has been designated as an official canoe and kayak trail, which carries paddlers into a rare, natural world of wildlife and scenic beauty.

Fall Graduation Celebration
 

The holiday party will be held before winter break (day, time, and location TBA) to celebrate the holidays and to give a proper send off to students graduating in December. This event is open to all MES students and faculty members.
