This orientation gives incoming MES Students a chance to meet their fellow first-year students, some faculty members, and representatives from MESSA (the MES Student Association). Additional information is provided about the MES Program, and students will have a chance to ask any questions they may have.

  Be part of South Carolina's solution to waterway pollution. Beach   Sweep is a state program that has a large positive effect on aquatic   pollution. Join MESSA and numerous other Charleston area groups on   Saturday, September 18th at 9:00am for Beach Sweep. Email MESSA   Volunteer Coordinator Amy Scaroni for more information or directions.

  MESSA Fall Camping Trip
  Givhans Ferry State Park

 

 

 

Make your plans for the MESSA fall camping trip at Givhans Ferry State Park. The park is an hour from Charleston. Friends, family, and pets are more than welcome. The campground has bathroom facilities and hot showers.

Givhans Ferry State Park is located on the banks of the beautiful Edisto River - the longest free-flowing blackwater river in North America. Bring your canoe, kayak, or inflatable alligator and join the fun. Contact Jeremy Conkle for more details.

Open to all students and all majors. Participating organizations include those recruiting upcoming December 2005 and May 2006 graduates for full-time career opportunities; organizations recruiting under-graduates for internships and/or part-time opportunities; and graduate and professional schools seeking to provide students with information about admission requirements and application procedures.

*Students should dress professionally. *Transportation is provided. A shuttle will take students to the Gaillard Auditorium, leaving from the Stern Student Center every 15 minutes on the day of the event, beginning at 11:45 am.  Forum on South Carolina Energy Issues
 Simons Center for the Arts, Room 309

The League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area and the Natural Resources Defense Council, along with the College of Charleston MES Program, the Environmental Studies Minor, the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Department of Political Science will present a discussion about energy issues facing South Carolina on Wednesday, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. Leading the discussion will be Deron Lovaas, Vehicles Campaign Director and Deputy Director for Smart Growth Policy at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Impacts of hurricanes Katrina and Rita have created an increased awareness of the need to diversify energy sources. Demand for energy is escalating, prices are rising and the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on foreign oil, particularly for our transportation system. The forum will focus on options for diversifying South Carolina’s energy sources, such as alternative fuels and energies, increased input from existing technologies, and smart growth emphasizing conservation and energy conservation. The forum is free and open to the community.

Bring out those oyster knives and gloves, because it’s time for the Annual MES Oyster Roast!

The Oyster Roast is sponsored by MESSA, and will be held at the Dixie Plantation, where there are forested trails to explore and a small boat dock where you can watch the sunset. With live music, food, beer, and, of course, oysters!, this will be a great opportunity for faculty, students, friends, family, and co-workers to join together for lots of fun.

The MES Oyster Roast uses local oysters, and the oyster shells are donated to SCORE and the SC Department of Natural Resources for oyster habitat restoration.

  Annual Geography Lecture

Dr. Kevin St. Martin from Rutgers University will speak about his ongoing research on the role of community in fisheries management in the northeastern United States. Dr. St. Martin's broader research interests lie in economic geography, political ecology, community and commons, and critical cartographies. More can be read about his work at his website. Any MES graduate students or faculty interested in a possible meeting with Dr. St. Martin to discuss his work should contact Dr. Patrick Hurley.

Please join us in the Grad Core Seminar room (Science Center Room 112) for our last MESSA meeting this semester. We will discuss MESSA t-shirts, the upcoming Holiday Party, officer elections, and details on the 8K for H2O road race in February. This meeting will last no longer than 30 minutes.

  MESSA Officer Elections

Yes, that's right, it's time to elect the new officers to take the MESSA reigns. Nominations for the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Social Chair, Public Relations Liason, and Outreach Coordinator will be taken starting today through Monday, November 28. Please e-mail Mark McConnel with your nominations. Officer Elections will be held Friday, December 2nd, starting at 4 pm on the third floor of the Southend Brewery, and are open to all MESSA members (all students enrolled in the MES program). General requirements for candidates are that they must be enrolled in the MES program between January and December 2006. We will send out a reminder before elections, but mark your calendar now and plan to hit the Winter Art Walk afterwards!
