Coastal Restoration Specialist (CRS)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY: CRS works with regional team members
and NCCF departmental leaders to manage all aspects of coastal
restoration activities within the central geographic region
of coastal North Carolina. The CRS will conduct field
restoration activities, manage restoration projects, provide
for grant administration and coordination, permitting and
restoration/construction oversight, and monitoring of restoration
sites, as well as work with other staff to advance the overall
mission of the North Carolina Coastal Federation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist
in obtaining funding, designing, and managing for coastal
restoration projects within the central coastal region of
North Carolina.
2. Administer
and conduct specific restoration projects as assigned by Supervisor.
3. Responsible
for planning and cost effective use of budgets.
4. Provide
leadership in planning and managing field work.
5. Responsible
for evaluating and solving problems related to restoration
projects.
6. Responsible
for design and coordination of NCCF’s restoration monitoring
program.
7. Maintain
records of restoration projects, including grant reports,
GIS maps, and database information.
8. Assist
in grant writing/management, planning and fund raising for
the restoration programs.
9. Keep abreast
of new knowledge, research and trends that affect NCCF’s
restoration mission.
10. Perform other appropriate
duties to assist Restoration Team in fulfilling its annual
work plan, as requested.
11. Responsible for helping
to achieve NCCF’s short-term and long-term restoration
goals.
12. Expected to work effectively
with partner organizations, agencies, and universities in
NCCF’s restoration projects.
13. Work effectively with
NCCF restoration volunteers; coordinate and supervise seasonal
restoration interns.
14. Participate in ongoing
initiatives and projects in the central region, including
the NC Oyster Plan, the Student Wetland Nursery Program, stormwater
projects, regional advisory committee, and other initiatives
as needed.
15. Effectively convey
NCCF’s message at local, state, and federal levels through
restoration project tours, professional conferences, legislative
forums, and public events.
16. Participate in team
and organization-wide planning and goal-setting; maintain
contact with board members, project partners, and volunteers.
KNOWLEDGE:
1. Minimum
education level of master’s degree in related natural
resource field or bachelor’s degree, and three year’s
experience in restoration or related work. East coast estuarine
and coastal systems knowledge preferred.
2. Ability
to collect, record, and manage data collected in connection
with restoration projects.
3. Demonstrate
excellent field ecology skills related to natural resource
management and/or restoration of oyster and coastal wetlands
habitats.
4. Strong
oral and written presentation skills.
5. Strong
communication and relationship skills; able to work effectively
as part of a team and independently.
6. Proficient
in independent project and grant management.
7. Skilled
in the use of applicable computer applications such as word
processing, EXCEL, GIS, and online research tools.

experience working around the water. Boat handling preferred,

Director of Conservation, Operations, and Education
Highstead (http://highsteadarboretum.org), a regional conservation
organization, natural area, and arboretum in southwestern
Connecticut, seeks a Director of Conservation, Operations,
and Education to manage operations as well as develop programs
in support of Highstead’s ecological research, conservation,
and outreach mission. Highstead is a non-profit organization
founded in 1982 that currently employs four staff members
at its 100-acre site housing superb facilities, extensive
forests, wetlands and open grasslands and unique collections
of native trees and shrubs.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Director is responsible for managing the operations,
maintenance, and expansion of Highstead’s physical facilities,
lands, and botanical collections, as well as for conducting
and promoting research, developing outreach and education
programs, producing print and electronic communications materials,
hiring and supervising staff, and implementing a fundraising
strategy.
The Director oversees visiting research activities and the
summer undergraduate research program, leads field trips for
visiting groups, and represents Highstead at public meetings
and conservation and research conferences.
Qualifications
Required - Masters or doctoral degree in an environmental
or natural science and at least 6 years experience, including
organizational and facilities management. Demonstrated experience
in administration, budget management, infrastructure and landscape
maintenance. Excellent oral and written communication and
presentation skills are necessary. Ability to interact productively
with visitors, neighbors, collaborators, and partnering organizations
is critical. A successful candidate must be self-sufficient,
highly detail-oriented, visionary, and a strong problem-solver.
Desired - Ph.D. in an environmental science, biological field
station experience, proven ability to facilitate research
and outreach programs and skills in information technology
(e.g., GIS, data ase management).

position at the level of Research Assistant Professor with
the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences
at the University of South Carolina, located in Columbia,
South Carolina; and the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource
Management of the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control (SCDHECOCRM), located in Charleston,
South Carolina. The Baruch Institute conducts basic research
on estuarine and coastal ocean environments. SCDHEC-OCRM is
responsible for the protection of the coastal environment,
while also promoting responsible development along the South
Carolina coast.
The candidate will be responsible for applied coastal research,
under the guidance of the Baruch Institute and SCDHEC-OCRM,
in the following areas:
1) Assessing coastal management information needs related
to shoreline change and public health issues; and
2) Assessing local governments’ needs for environmental
and socioeconomic information to support improved land-use
planning and policies for South Carolina's coastal areas.
The position will be located on the main campus of the University
of South Carolina, with the understanding that approximately
20% of the faculty member’s time will be in residence
at the Charleston office of the SCDHEC-OCRM. Management and
review of the faculty member will be jointly administered
between the Baruch Institute and SCDHEC-OCRM. For this position,
we are seeking an individual with a Ph.D. who has training
in environmental sciences and experience related to coastal
policy/resource management issues. Candidates with a background
in applied environmental sciences, and demonstrated capacity
for policy-related research and analyses, will be favored.

necessary.
This is a one-year appointment with potential continuation
contingent on annual performance reviews and availability

Primary Duties: Education program assistant positions provide
coordination and implementation of interpretive and educational
programming at the Aquarium. Programs include: on-site interpretation;
off-site (shoreline habitats) interpretation; on and off-site
classroom programs; outreach programs at one of the recreation
community centers, and/or a local parks. Under the program
coordinators supervision develop interpretive presentations
and classroom programs for Aquarium visitors. Coordinate and
implement training for Volunteers, Aquarium Guides, and other
staff working in interpretation section. Supervise interpretive
volunteers and assist with interpretive program evaluation,
tracking and administration. Assemble learning material, supplies,
and program kits. Teach programs as needed. This
position will require work in the evening and on the weekends.
The primary role of these positions will be to support a new
exhibit, Windows on Washington Waters which includes a 120,000
gallon saltwater tank with living marine specimens. These
positions will interpret the exhibit from both inside (underwater
interpretation using SCUBA equipment) and outside the tank,
and will be responsible for technical support of electronic
media tools within the exhibit space. There are four
positions available ranging from 20 - 40 hours/week.
Required Qualifications: The equivalent of six months of
experience working with the general public or school groups
in a zoo, aquarium, park, natural history, science museum
or related wildlife facility and one year of college level
natural sciences course work (or a combination of education
and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent
background required to perform the work of the class).
A current valid Washington State Drivers License and a current
open water SCUBA certification.
Desired Qualifications: BA or BS in Biology, Education or
any related fields. Three years working with a diverse
populations in an aquarium like setting. Two years of experience
teaching and interpreting environmental programs in a wide
variety of traditional and/or non-traditional environments.
Candidates should be able to multi-task, and meet tight deadlines,
with very little supervision. These individuals should be
highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding
and stress filled work environment. Candidates should
be able to communicate in writing as well as orally.
Two years of public speaking. Six months or more of experience
with underwater interpretation using full face masks.
Have in-depth knowledge of A.V. equipment i.e., microphones,
palm pilots, and computers and be able to trouble shoot problems
and maintain this equipment.
