Position Location: The CSP Coordinator will be a part the MASGC administrative unit at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Sustainable Health Care Communications Director - VA

Communications Director

Job description: Help promote a green and healthy health care industry

Seeking Communications Director for a new non-profit organization, to be launched in mid January, that combines and builds upon two successful initiatives that have been leading the effort to make the US health care sector more environmentally sustainable. Since 1998, Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E - www.h2e.org) has been working to reduce waste, eliminate mercury and protect patients and workers from exposure to toxic chemicals in the health care setting. Originally formed as a four-way partnership of the American Hospital Association, American Nurses Association, Health Care Without Harm and the US Environmental Protection Agency, H2E became an independent organization in 2006 and is now joining forces with the Green Guide for Health Care, the premiere green building tool for health care facilities; and the Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange, a program to help hospitals reduce their climate footprint. This new combined organization (yet to be named) will offer a full range of tools, resources, technical assistance and networking opportunities to engage all sectors within the health care industry in shifting the market toward environmentally preferable products and safer, healthier practices. The Communications Director will also be responsible for helping to promote our sister organization, Health Care Without Harm (www.NoHarm.org), and CleanMed, the premiere conference for environmentally sustainable health care (www.CleanMed.org).

About the Applicant: Applicants should have 5-7 years experience, preferably as a working journalist or handling media relations for a nonprofit organization and/or the health care sector. Established relationships with reporters, familiarity with health care trade press and experience pitching reporters is a significant plus. We are looking for someone with exceptional writing and editing skills -- particularly the ability to translate complex issues into clear, simple ideas - and someone who has a demonstrated track record in marketing and promoting programs. The ideal candidate will be a self starter and strategic thinker with a get-it-done attitude. The person should also be able to demonstrate a commitment to environmental health issues, interest in working in the nonprofit sector, high energy level, and comfort working in a collaborative environment.

The Communications Director is responsible for directing all aspects of PR and marketing for the new organization, including creating and carrying out a strategic marketing and communications plan with the goal of attracting and recruiting members to the new organization. Specifically, this individual will be responsible for:

Media Relations: This includes writing and strategically distributing press releases, opinion pieces, and other materials; placing stories in appropriate national, local and online outlets; setting up opportunities for our experts to appear on radio, TV, or before editorial boards; and organizing press events or briefings when appropriate.

Online Marketing Strategies and Web Presence: This requires devising aggressive internet marketing strategies to raise the profile and recruit members for the new organization - including email advocacy campaigns, building listserves, positioning our experts as leaders in the field and promoting expert content. Successful applicants will have experience in building successful online campaigns and will come to the interview prepared to discuss specific ideas for building the online presence of the organization. Duties will also include working with staff to build out the new website (currently in development), updating content and helping to maintain the new site.

Marketing Key Programs: Responsibilities include promoting key programs of the organization to appropriate constituencies - for example, marketing the Healthcare Energy Exchange to energy professionals, and the Green Guide for Health Care to architects and designers. This will require separately devised communications plans and efforts to target key audiences with the right language using the right vehicles. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate success in program marketing.

Writing and Editing Materials: Duties include overseeing the production (including writing, editing and concepting) of a monthly e-newsletter, called StatGreen, and other marketing materials to be determined. May also include writing articles and op eds for publication. Applicants will be required to show writing samples.

Education: A Bachelors degree or the equivalence is required.

COMPENSATION:

An attractive and market-competitive compensation and benefits program is planned for this position.

Fishery Management Community Sector Coordinator - New England

Gulf of Maine Research Institute
www.gma.org

Here is an opportunity for someone who wants to play a role in the transformation of groundfishing from the current input control, Days At
Sea, model to the evolving Community Sector Model.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:               Community Sector Coordinator – Southern Region

Supervisor:     Director of Community Initiatives

Overview:

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is a non-profit marine science center serving the Gulf of Maine/Georges Bank bioregion. Our dynamic fusion of research, education, and community programs are aimed at realizing the potential of the region’s marine ecosystem and the human communities that depend on them. Working collaboratively with scientific institutions, government agencies, and the fishing community, GMRI develops pragmatic solutions to complex problems to support the sustainable use of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the communities that depend on it.

GMRI is at an extraordinary point in its evolution. We have served the Gulf of Maine coastal community with a unique neutral forum to transform fishery management through constructive dialogue. We’ve built a world-class research and education platform, which opened in 2005, and recruited an international, multi-disciplinary research team. We’ve assembled the digital learning environment and funding model to provide Maine’s middle school students with universal access to an extraordinary marine research experience.  The Sector Community Coordinator will have a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in defining and implementing a Community strategic plan that engages and serves the diverse fishery stakeholders in the Gulf of Maine bioregion.

Roles & Responsibilities:

GMRI has initiated an Extension Program to provide technical support to groups of fishermen developing sectors (harvest cooperatives) in the groundfish fishery throughout New England.  We are seeking candidates to fill one of two Community Sector Coordinators positions – one will be focused on Northern New England (primarily Maine and New Hampshire) while the second Community Sector Coordinator will be focused on Southern New England (primarily Massachusetts and Rhode Island).  The Community Sector Coordinator/Southern Region will work closely with the Northeast Seafood Coalition as well as staff at GMRI in development and implementation of a Sector Extension Program to provide technical and organizational support to groups of New England fishery stakeholders who wish to form fishery sectors.

Sectors, in the present New England context, are self selecting groups of permit holders who form a sector for the purpose of receiving and managing an allocation of catch for a particular fishery. To date, a process for authorizing and implementing sectors has been developed only for the Northeast Multispecies fishery; however, it is expected that the ability to form sectors will be extended to other fisheries in the near future. While the primary initial focus of the Community Sector Coordinator will be to support efforts of groups to form sectors in the Multispecies fishery, he or she will also be involved in educating stakeholders in various New England fisheries about the sector management tool and in supporting efforts to develop sectors in other fisheries as the need arises. The Sector Coordinator/Southern Region will be expected to work 2-3 days/week at the Northeast Seafood Coalition offices in Gloucester, Massachusetts and 1-2 days/week at GMRI in Portland, Maine.

As an integral part of GMRI’s Community team, the Sector Coordinator will participate in team meetings and will contribute to GMRI’s commitment to convening diverse stakeholders, engaging the community in marine issues, and facilitating quality dialogue throughout the Gulf of Maine. Specific tasks include the following:

Technical Assistance:

•           Provide technical and organizational assistance to groups attempting to form sectors including:
o          Assist potential sector members in securing the legal expertise needed to assemble the necessary contracts, bylaws, protections, etc. to establish their sector as a legal entity.
o          Work with sector members to negotiate details of operating plans, which include methods for allocating catch or opportunity among sector members, a monitoring and reporting system, and potentially operational rules designed to improve environmental performance of the sector.
o          Assist with drafting formal operations plans and environmental assessments for proposed groundfish sectors.
o          Collaborate with NOAA Northeast Regional Office staff to finalize operations plans and environmental assessments.
•           Modify operations plans and environmental assessments from proposed sectors to make generic templates in cooperation with other sector organizers to improve efficiency of annual reauthorization of sectors and developing future sectors
•           Work with NOAA Fisheries and NEFMC staff to evaluate cumulative impacts of sectors and include this analysis in environmental assessments.
•           Collaborate with GMRI sector staff and NOAA Fisheries staff to develop and implement a series of 3-4 training workshops and associated workbooks and training materials for new sector managers. Workshops will cover administrative and regulatory requirements and will provide opportunities for sector managers to discuss common problems and learn from each other’s experience.
•           Provide technical assistance to sector managers to help recently approved sectors to meet sector administration needs.

Sector Outreach:

•           Facilitate, in cooperation with sector organizers,  4-5 outreach meetings in coastal communities across the New England region to present a realistic view of opportunities (and challenges) presented by sectors in the groundfish industry.
•           Work with GMRI Communication Specialist to develop and produce communication materials, targeted at key fishing industry members, regarding sectors and their potential as a new management structure.
•           Document the process and specific requirements necessary to form a sector and produce informational materials for fishery stakeholders, in cooperation with Communication Specialist.
