The Haw River Program (HARP) is the first residential environmental education program in NC State Park history! HARP is an outdoor education center located at Haw River State Park, in beautiful Browns Summit, near Greensboro, NC. We're seeking dedicated, energetic Outdoor education enthusiasts to become HARP instructors. HARP offers programming ranging from 1-day experiences up to 5-day/4-night residential stays. Our "classrooms" include several hundred wooded acres, pristine wetlands, a 6-acre lake, and the headwaters of the Haw River. Why work here instead of another outdoor education center?
HARP is determined to create and maintain the highest standards within the field of environmental education. Additionally, you'll get the opportunity to explore career options at one of the top state park systems in the nation. The position is a 10-month seasonal position with the NC State Park System. Your employment will include: salary commensurate with experience ($300 - $350 per week); housing may be provided for only $30 a month, plus outdoor education experience in Astronomy, Ecology, History, Orienteering, Team Building, Soils and Wetlands Ecology. Part time instructor positions are also available.

The Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory of the Southern Research Station will be hiring a Seasonal Biological Science Technician. The positions will be at the GS-05 level for a period not to exceed 6 months ($13,784). The duty station will be located at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in Otto, NC. The Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory has been in continuous operation since 1934 and the research program spans the continuum of basic to applied science. Coweeta is a Long-Term Ecological Research Site and works cooperatively with several universities, National Forests, and local, state, and other federal agencies.
The incumbent will support (80% field data collection, 20% laboratory and data input) research focused on understanding responses of watershed ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbances. Potential projects include, but are not limited to, (1) riparian zone structure, function, and restoration, (2) ecosystem responses to disturbances, and (3) carbon, water, and nutrient cycling in forested ecosystems.
Strong candidates for the position will have (1) strong plant identification skills, and (2) familiarity and experience with a variety of field data collection techniques.

Gulf Regional Training Coordinator - AL

Position Description:
The Gulf Regional Training Coordinator is a full-time, grant-funded contract position that will be housed at the Weeks Bay Foundation office in Fairhope, Alabama. The training coordinator will work with the Gulf Coast National Estuarine Research Reserves’ (NERRs) Coastal Training Programs (CTP) in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas to link the goals and objectives of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (Alliance) Priority Issue Teams with the training and information needs of local communities. Additionally, the coordinator will work with NERR CTPs to design and facilitate a series of targeted professional workshops across each of the Gulf States. These projects will engage local communities, raise awareness about the Alliance, and result in activities that improve the health of the Gulf of Mexico and its citizens. This position will be grant funded for a minimum of one year with three years of funding anticipated. At a minimum, the Gulf Regional Training Coordinator will be expected to:
A) Gather local and regional input and assess existing documents to determine the needs of both coastal communities and the Alliance Priority Issue Teams;
B) Participate in at least three (3) GOMA Priority Issue Team meetings, the Environmental Education Network meeting, the GOMA All-Hands meeting, and travel to necessary meetings as required;
C) Identify opportunities to provide professional decision-maker training on Alliance priorities using information gathered from Alliance states, Priority Issue Teams, and NERR Coastal Training Program needs assessments;
D) Conduct a minimum of four (quarterly) conference calls with the project Steering Committee to identify Alliance related outcomes and activities from all five NERRS and discuss plans for upcoming events and activities;
E) Work with NERR CTP Coordinators to develop and facilitate at least 5 professional and technical workshops prior to September 30, 2008. These workshops should target coastal decision-makers and directly support the Priority Issue Teams
F) Maintain a website for the project to advertise trainings, post results of trainings, and;
G) Perform other tasks as needed.
This project will result in a methodology for conducting workshops consistently across the Gulf States that provides science-based information to coastal decision-makers. This model for sharing successful strategies from location to location will involve local communities in a meaningful way. The five NERRS on the Gulf Coast (Mission-Aransas in Texas, Grand Bay in Mississippi, Weeks Bay in Alabama, Apalachicola and Rookery Bay in Florida) will host most of the workshops at their facilities and other locations in coastal counties within their regions of service. The workshops will require coordination with and/or training by NOAA partners such as the Coastal Services Center, Gulf Coast Service Center, Coastal Restoration Center, Sea Grant Programs and other NOAA programs that are involved with Alliance support. Other partners such as the National Estuary Programs in Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida may also collaborate on workshops to expand the geographic scope of the audiences and communities reached.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, or environmental education, land use or conservation planning, marine or coastal science or policy, communication, a related field or commensurate experience;
Excellent communication and organizational skills including the ability to translate science for professionals and non-scientists including coastal decision-makers;
Proficiency in computer programs such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel; and a willingness to participate in the development and management of internet resources such as a homepage for the program;
Experience and skills with working with diverse audiences including facilitation and outreach experience;
Ability to organize meetings, events, workshops and/or conferences, including program evaluation and project management experience;
General knowledge of coastal issues, science and/or policy;
Ability to work with limited direct supervision while accommodating the preferences and direction from off-site coordinators with whom he/she will be working regularly;
Valid driver’s license, with three year clean driving record; and
Ability to travel within and out of state.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, or environmental education, land use or conservation planning, marine or coastal science or policy, communication, a related field;
Experience and skills related to web development and management including but not limited to graphical design, coding, multimedia resources, and search engine optimization (SOE) protocol;
Advanced knowledge of coastal issues, science, and/or policy; and
Previous experience working with agencies and organizations in close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.
Preference will be given to candidates who are located near (or are willing to re-locate to) the Fairhope area.
Physical Requirements:
Moderate Work: May frequently exert force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 25 pounds and/or occasionally exert force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 50 pounds. These physical requirements are not exhaustive, and additional job related physical requirements may be added to these by individual agencies on an as needed basis. Salary Range: $33,000-40,000 commensurate with experience
The Gulf Alliance Regional CTP Coordinator will work at Weeks Bay Foundation under supervision by the Weeks Bay and Grand Bay CTP coordinators. The job will require frequent in and out of state travel. The position is a contract position beginning immediately with funding for at least one year with the possibility of three years and will be subject to all standard requirements for employment. In addition to salary based upon experience, a stipend is provided for benefits and other fringe.

Looking to fill one field/laboratory technician position to assist in project investigating the effects of mercury on amphibian reproduction and development. The position will involve collecting adult amphibians in the field during their breeding season and the subsequent husbandry of tadpoles and juveniles at our Virginia Tech facilities.
This position will begin in February 2009 and continue for 9-12 months with the potential extension pending the availability of funding. Work hours will sometimes exceed 40 hrs/week and night/weekend work will be required. Shared housing will be provided at the field site (ca. March 1st - May 1st) but the applicant is responsible for providing her or his own living accommodations in Blacksburg (assistance with housing searches can be provided). The applicant will coordinate aspects of the study and work closely with a PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher involved in the project. Job Description:
The Florida Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit is based out of the University of Florida in Gainesville and oversees several ongoing wetland-related research projects. We are seeking a highly motivated field technician to assist with the long-term study of the endangered Snail Kite. We are monitoring the Snail Kite population via mark-recapture and radio telemetry methods as well as making behavioral observations and collecting data related to habitat use and foraging ecology. Field work for this project is conducted throughout the wetland ecosystems of central and south Florida from the Kissimmee chain of lakes in the north (near Orlando) to the Everglades in the south (near Miami). The field work involves the extensive use of airboats.
Applicants must be willing to work LONG, flexible hours in a HOT, humid environment. (Some days involve working from sunrise to sunset). All of the necessary training will be supplied, including airboat operation and maintenance. Duties include trapping and handling of snail kites, behavioral observations, radio telemetry, mark-recapture surveys, nest searching, data entry, snail trapping, vegetation sampling, and maintenance of field equipment and boats. Assistance on peripheral projects may also be required from time to time, including vegetation sampling in the Everglades and identification of plants in the lab. Salary: $1280-$1600/month (dependent upon funding) + housing. Housing will be provided at the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area south of St. Cloud, FL. Applicant should be comfortable living in a field house with only a few other coworkers.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, Wildlife, or a related field. Applicant must have a valid U.S. driver's license. Experience with engine repair/maintenance and boats is a major plus, but not necessary. Ability to comfortably handle wild raptors is also a plus. Previous radio tracking experience is preferred. This position starts the first week in February and lasts until August, with the possibility of continuation into the 2010 field season. Two Assistant Wildlife Biologists are needed to conduct marsh bird surveys (rails and bitterns) at St Marks NWR and Ten Thousand Islands NWR in Florida from Feb through June.
Duties will include early morning and evening surveys for marsh birds (on foot, by kayak, and potentially airboat) and data management. Some night work may also be required. Housing and field vehicles provided.
Salaries range from $1500 - $1800 per month depending on experience. Prior field experience, experience with boats, and the ability to identify birds by sight and sound are preferred. Applicants should also be able to work independently in relatively remote field conditions.

This position will support the CSC's Coastal Learning Services (CLS) program. CLS serves the nation's coastal resource managers through training workshops, professional conferences, and meeting support services. The program also provides a wide range of related consulting services on topics that include instructional design, follow up technical support on implementing skills learned via course work, and facilitation. This exciting position will help foster sustainable, cutting edge coastal community development practices by training coastal professionals and decision-makers.
Duties:
- Serves as climate adaptation, land-use and/or community resilience planning consultant, providing technical assistance for state and local coastal management practitioners and other CSC partners
- Provides training in the areas of adaptation to climate change, land-use planning, and/or community resilience planning and related areas
- Designs and develops new training based on CSC customer needs, conducts appropriate needs assessments
- Develops learning networks of coastal professionals focused on climate adaptation.
- Monitors climate adaptation developing trends and best practices.
Qualifications:
- MS in urban or regional planning or related field, and a minimum two years directly related experience; planning certification a plus
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in community adaptation to climate change, land-use planning, smart growth principles, and/or coastal community resilience to hazards
- Ability to design and deliver effective learning activities for the coastal management community; knowledge of instructional design and training methodologies for adult learners a plus
- Excellent oral and presentation skills
- Ability to develop and engage learning networks
- Experience with web-based or other distance learning a plus

POSITION DUTIES: The Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Service, is currently accepting applications for a full-time Natural Resources Biologist III position located at the Tawes State Office Building in Annapolis, MD. Applicants for this position must be willing to work in this area of Maryland. This position administers a statewide program responsible for the design and implementation of commercial striped bass monitoring including monitoring six separate fisheries components: Chesapeake Pound Net, Chesapeake Haul Seine, Commercial Hook and Line, Chesapeake Drift Gill Net, Atlantic Trawl, and Atlantic Gill Net. Data from the commercial fishery is an integral part of the coast-wide management of striped bass. Although primarily functioning in the office, this position will involve some field work and requires 40+ hours per week, including occasional weekends and early morning hours.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study
Experience: Four years experience in professional biological work in the field of natural resources management
Notes:
1. Additional professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required degree.

We are seeking an innovative leader with broad programmatic vision and enthusiasm for leadership as well as program implementation, integration and assessment. Georgia Sea Grant supports research, education and marine extension to help people understand, reap benefits from, and wisely manage coastal communities, economies and natural resources.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director provides assistance in biennial Sea Grant proposal preparation, implementation and monitoring. This assistance involves preparation of the request for proposals, coordination of the review process, and assembly and submittal of the proposal. The job will also involve monitoring individual funded projects, preparing project reports, and assisting in the preparation of accountability documents and reviews. The Assistant Director will assist in strategic planning for GA SG, coordinate statewide meetings and panels and prepare strategic planning materials.
The Assistant Director also will serve as liaison for research, education and extension efforts within GA SG and Marine Extension and promote communication between coastal and "upstate" groups. The position will require extensive travel in order to communicate with various constituencies on the coast, throughout the state and in Athens, where the position is located.
Basic Qualifications:
Master's degree or PhD. or a combination of a Bachelor's degree with substantial experience in research, education or extension in marine, coastal or natural resource areas. Extremely strong communication skills also are required. The applicant's record should demonstrate a commitment to improving exchange between scientists, educators, outreach agents and stakeholders. Applicant must have the ability to work collaboratively with research faculty, educators, students, and outreach and extension agents; familiarity with impact documentation and assessment; ability to supervise and manage staff; and ability to organize and facilitate seminars and workshops and to organize peer reviews. Experience working in a university environment, in multitasking, and in working with multiple constituencies is desirable. Experience in working with federal, state, and non-profit groups is also desirable as is experience in business administration.

The Georgia Sea Grant College Program is based at the University of Georgia, in Athens. While the Program serves all institutions of higher education in the state of Georgia, it reports to the UGA Vice President for Research.
