Description of Work: This position serves as an Environmental Science Educator for the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center, located in Harkers Island adjacent to the Cape Lookout National Seashore headquarters. Reporting directly to the Director, this position is responsible for developing, presenting and evaluating educational programs to the public, school groups, tour groups and others. An appreciation for role of natural resources in the cultural traditions of the Core Sound Region is important. This position will work closely with the Museum director and community resources / collections staff to lead in the development and implementation of environmental education programs and exhibits based at the museum, assist in training volunteers, conduct long-range planning and promote the museum’s success. Evening, weekend and holiday work is sometimes required.
Preferred experience: Graduation from a four-year college or university with course work emphasis in wildlife management, environmental education, biology or related science field and one years’ experience in wildlife management, teaching or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience working with the public, teaching students of all ages and teaching in a nature center, museum, public school, or similar facility. Strong knowledge of and ability to teach about the flora and fauna of Core Sound ecosystems.
NC EE certification and First Aid / CPR certification preferred. Prior experience in educational program design and assembly. Grant writing experience a plus. Proficient in computer skills, and research and organization.

Background:
Environmental Defense seeks a Coral Specialist for its Oceans Program. The Oceans program works to find constructive solutions to the most critical problems threatening the world's marine environments. At the national and regional levels, our team of scientists, attorneys and economists are tackling land-based sources of ocean pollution and working with fishermen to establish fair and sensible limits on their catch that will allow fisheries to recover. We are also working to create marine protected areas, where the rich diversity of sea life can thrive relatively undisturbed. Our Oceans Program focuses on safeguarding marine ecosystems and fisheries in the North and South Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific and the Caribbean.
Overall Function:
The Coral Specialist, based in the Sarasota, FL office, will be member of Environmental Defense’s Oceans Program working in a multi-disciplinary setting to formulate and implement strategies to advance conservation practices and policies with respect to the trade of corals and coral products. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of achieving results by understanding key drivers, developing a strong rationale, and executing strategies to achieve results to solve complex environmental problems. The job requires working closely with the Oceans Program’s National Policy Director and with a variety of concerned parties, including state government, private industry, grassroots organizations, and others to achieve measurable environmental results.
Primary Responsibilities:
o Develop a deep understanding of the environmental and economic impacts associated with the trade of coral reef species.
o Work with market experts within the Oceans Program and with external partners to develop policy, economic, and science-based solutions for addressing impacts of coral trade.
o Lead the development and implementation of robust and effective policy and communications strategies in key states to transform the coral trade through improved policies.
o Manage and coordinate outreach and education efforts and key partnerships.
o Develop and cultivate strategic coalitions and other relationships vital to the success of the project.
o Conduct outreach and education to federal and state lawmakers, businesses, and other concerned parties.
o Monitor ongoing activities related to coral reef conservation; track news and information related to the coral trade; communicate key events to other Environmental
Defense staff; help decide in which activities to actively participate; and identify new strategic opportunities.
o Represent Environmental Defense at meetings, public events, and with the media.
Qualifications:
o Bachelor’s degree required (advance degree preferred) in environmental studies, natural resources management, communications, politics or other related field.
o Minimum five years relevant work experience in the environmental, political, communications, or related field.
o Demonstrated leadership and success in developing and implementing strategic policy campaigns to achieve desired outcomes.
o Must be familiar with conservation issues related to coral reef ecosystems.
o Possess strong organizational and people skills, be a self-starter, but able to work closely with Directors and other staff.
o Must have excellent written and public communications skills, experience working with the media, good computer skills, and the ability to work independently.
o Willingness to travel.

Jud Harvey and Greg Noe are hiring up to two full-time, non-permanent technicians to work on our research projects in the National Research Program of the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. Our research has the goal of improving scientific understanding of water quality in streams, wetlands and floodplains as affected by hydrological transport processes in flowing surface water and ground water, biogeochemical reactions, and plant and microbial ecology. The jobs are based in Reston, Virginia, with field work in several areas of the U.S., including the Florida Everglades, the Lake Pontchartrain basin in Louisiana, Maple Creek asin in Nebraska, and a variety of sites within the Chesapeake Bay watershed in Virginia and Maryland. Scientific knowledge gained from field sampling, chemical and physical analyses, and statistical and modeling analyses are considered essential to successful restoration of these aquatic ecosystems. Primary duties involve a spectrum of tasks encompassing field data collection, laboratory analysis of the chemical composition of natural waters and sediments, database tasks such as entering, transferring, and checking, summarizing, and preparing of data for quantitative analysis, analyzing and interpreting data using a variety of statistical and mathematical models, preparing publication-quality graphics and tables, preparing presentation materials for international scientific meetings, and drafting text for reports and publications in scientific journals.
One technician will focus on chemical analyses including use of a segmented flow autoanalyzer, CHN elemental analyzer, ion chromatograph, and ICP-OES. The other technician will focus on automating the collection of data from hydrological field instrumentation and analyzing large data sets using a variety of software and modeling tools. Appropriate training is necessary and prior experience is highly desirable.
Successful applicants will be hired as non-permanent USGS Research Associates through a contracting agency (such as ETI Professionals Inc.). Salary will be commensurate with experience and will include health, vacation, and sick leave benefits. Applicants must be recent graduates. Sustainability Coordinator:
The Sustainability Coordinator serves as a facilitator in the College's move towards sustainability. The Sustainability Coordinator understands the role of the student body within the Meredith community, provides opportunities to mobilize student involvement in the growth and development of the campus, develops and promotes sustainability programs which increase environmental awareness and facilitate environmental literacy among the College community, and is the primary contact with the external community about issues and advances in sustainable practices at Meredith College.
The Sustainability Coordinator works with the Meredith faculty to integrate sustainability initiatives and practices into the curriculum, leads the development of a campus sustainability committee and assists in the implementation of a comprehensive sustainability plan for the College.
