Furman University seeks candidates for a full-time Assistant Director position in our new interdisciplinary Center for Sustainability. This individual will assist the Center for Sustainability (CFS) staff in launching, managing, and assessing programs and events. Primary responsibility is to organize CFS outreach efforts across the campus and in the community. Position will begin on July 1, 2009.

The Assistant Director responsibilities will include:

1) Collaboration with Director of the CFS to develop or enhance sustainability programs, projects, and events on campus and within the metropolitan Greenville and Upstate South Carolina community

2) Administration of all community-outreach programming associated with Sustainability Living Learning Laboratories (including the Cliffs Cottage, the Biodiesel recycling project, the Organic Garden, the Place of Peace, the University’s Recycling and Composting program, the Lake Restoration efforts, the GREEN Residence Room, and the Townes Science Center Living Machine) and ongoing monitoring and research (for assessment, outreach, and communications purposes);

3) Working with students and student organizations to assist their sustainability-related initiatives, including all organizations making up the Sustainable Connections network/alliance; and

4) Serving as a public ambassador for the Center for Sustainability and Furman. The successful candidate will have strong experience with campus and community outreach (e.g., programming, events, communications), editing and copywriting, and excellent organizational and managerial skills.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with others of a variety of backgrounds, manage in a team environment, take initiative and work independently, and create high quality written and verbal communications professional written and verbal communications are required. Experience in office software, including website development, word processing and spreadsheets a must. Ability to effectively plan, promote, and implement public outreach with an eye towards fundraising potential for future sustainability efforts on campus key to the position’s success.

Bachelor's degree in communications/public administration/public policy or related sustainability fields; Master's degree preferred; 2-3 years experience in related field preferred.

The Offshore Energy and Minerals Management (www.mms.gov/offshore) Program is responsible for minerals resource management on more than 1.76 billion acres of the Outer Continental Shelf (www.mms.gov/aboutmms/ocs.htm). Additionally, OEMM works in partnership with fourteen coastal states to manage access to sand and gravel resources for coastal restoration and shore protection projects.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (http://pipeline.mms.gov/PDF/2005/COMM_CONGAFF_109_Eng_HR6section388.pdf) amended the OCS Lands Act to give authority to the Department of the Interior to coordinate the development of an alternative energy program on the OCS and also to coordinate the energy and non-energy related uses in areas of the OCS where traditional oil and natural gas development already occurs. Alliance to Save Energy seeking Green Campus SENIOR Program Associate

Position Description:

The Alliance to Save Energy is seeking a full-time Senior Program Associate to assist with development and implementation of the brand new California Community College Green Campus Program out of the Los Angeles Community College District office in Los Angeles, CA. The existing Green Campus Program is a student-driven energy efficiency and workforce education and training initiative currently serving 12 UC and CSU campuses and Stanford University (13 total). The Green Campus Program employs and manages paid student interns on each participating campus; these interns develop and implement academic and outreach programs that foster energy efficient knowledge and behaviors, and identify operations changes and retrofit opportunities on their campuses. Green workforce education and training is a primary program goal, with interns trained to emerge as highly skilled sustainability and energy efficiency professionals at the time of graduation.

Working out of LA, but in close collaboration with ASE staff in Oakland, CA and Washington, DC, the Senior Program Associate will manage on-site and day-to-day program tasks of the Green Campus Program in the Los Angeles Community College District and make a significant contribution to the program’s strategic direction. Candidates should have a good eye for detail and, at the same time, be capable of seeing the bigger picture. In addition, the Senior Program Associate must have exceptionally strong written and oral communication skills, along with experience in developing programs, managing projects, speaking in public, and facilitating meetings. Experience working for campus sustainability initiatives is desirable, and a familiarity with both energy efficiency technologies and the California Community College system is a definite plus. Candidates should be self-starters who can juggle multiple tasks with a minimum of supervision and guidance.

Head-quartered in Washington, DC, the non-profit Alliance to Save Energy promotes energy efficiency worldwide to achieve a healthier economy, a cleaner environment, and greater energy security. The Alliance’s Oakland, California field office implements two exciting programs, Green Campus (college level) and Green Schools (K-12).

The Senior Program Associate will train with and frequently meet with Project Manager and other staff in the Alliance to Save Energy’s California field office, located in downtown Oakland, which houses a small, collegial, and busy team of environmental education professionals.

Specific Senior Program Associate duties include:

Program Development/Innovation (approx. 40%)
- Assist with the development and launch of the California Community College Green Campus Program
o Recruit, hire and train new interns
o Identify and liaise with key campus stakeholders (faculty, staff, administrators, etc.)
o Convene and Facilitate initial stakeholder advisory meeting
o Develop program marketing and outreach materials
- Actively identify opportunities to adapt and add value to the community college specific Green Campus Program.
- Work collaboratively with the Alliance to Save Energy Education Team (in Washington DC, Oakland, and Los Angeles) to plan and develop new initiatives as needed
- Regularly communicate with and regularly convene program stakeholders to assist with project and program development and implementation.
- Keep abreast of developments in state and national energy policy/programs and network with others in the energy efficiency field.

Management of Green Campus Intern Teams on three - four Los Angeles Community College campuses (approx. 35%)
- Recruit, interview, hire, and orient new Green Campus Interns
- Assist interns with project development and implementation, including building strong partnerships with stakeholders; track intern progress:
o Ensure interns understand their responsibilities and complete program deliverables in a timely fashion.
o Stimulate communication amongst the community college Green Campus Teams and also with Interns from the full state-wide program.
o Assist interns in conducting press outreach
o Facilitate intern partnerships with key administrators, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders
- Visit each campus approximately once every one to three weeks, or as needed
- Conduct weekly conference calls with intern teams
Special Event Planning/ Conference Presentations (approx. 10%)
- Collaborate with ASE colleagues to plan and implement program-wide Green Campus functions
- Organize workshops and training sessions to support community college Green Campus Intern development
- Deliver and help to plan conference presentations
Administrative Responsibilities (approx. 15%)
- Compile, write, and edit narrative monthly reports (and relevant attachments) to program funders.
- Assist Green Campus Interns in purchasing items for program activities
- Review and approve Intern timesheets
- Assist in budget creation and expense tracking
- Other tasks as needed

Job qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, at a minimum
- Demonstrated project management skills and dedication to environmental causes
- At least 1-2 years professional experience (preference given to candidates with campus organizing – particularly at community colleges - and non-profit experience)

The selected applicant will help monitor the Big Cypress Red-cockaded Woodpecker population for reproductive success.

Duties will include surveying for active clusters, accurately identifying color bands in the field during regular population censuses, climbing cavity trees using sectional ladders, trapping and banding adults and nestlings, and conducting maintenance on natural and artificial cavity trees. Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to habitat analysis, prescribed burning, and translocation of sub-adult birds. Applicant will also operate, maintain and in many cases repair equipment used for monitoring. Equipment may include chainsaws, cavity inspection cameras, and swamp buggies. Additional duties will include GPS data collection and entry using Arc View, Microsoft Access, and Excel as well as preparing technical reports and presentations.

There is a possibility of housing being provided with this position. Position starts early May and lasts through July.

Big Cypress is host to the southernmost population of RCWs in its range as well as the endangered Florida panther, black bears, otters, gators and more wading birds than you could imagine.

On occasion, the successful candidate may be required to work alone, possibly in remote locations.

The primary work activity is banding waterfowl (wood ducks and mottled ducks) via nightlighting and bait-trapping. Additional activities include: maintenance of facilities and vehicles, collecting habitat data and biological samples, computer data entry, and miscellaneous other office duties.

Self-motivated persons with a background in wildlife biology and strong interest in waterfowl/wetlands, who can work independently, are encouraged to apply. Boating experience is a plus. Duties will include, but are not limited to: herbivorous fish surveys, algal/coral surveys, herbivore behavioral observations, sample sorting, data entry. Almost all field work will be conducted on SCUBA. Typical field days would consist of 7-8 hours on the water with 3-4 dives per day.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s in Biology/Marine Biology (or upper division undergraduate) or related field, SCUBA certification (NITROX certification preferred), experience with coral reef ecology/fish ecology preferred. A valid driver’s license is required. Boating experience and current SCUBA certification with AAUS (American Academy of Underwater Sciences) is a plus. Successful applicant needs to be hardworking and willing to potentially work weekends.

This position will come with the possibility of extending until Dec 31, 2009.

The HSBC Climate Partnership is an exciting new program with HSBC Bank and several international NGOs, furthering our strong experience of partnerships. This global, 5-year program aims to reduce the impacts of Climate Change on people and their livelihoods, by promoting action in some of the world's major cities, river basins and ecosystems. Earthwatch's role in this partnership will be to investigate climate change impacts on forest ecosystems, including the links to anthropogenic disturbance.

Under a five year funded program, the Earthwatch Institute is setting up regional climate centers in the following countries: UK, USA, Brazil, India and China. These centers provide the base for the research program which aims to engage HSBC employees and communities surrounding the centers in understanding and acting on Climate Change. In addition, these regional climate centers will provide the environment for HSBC staff to develop knowledge and skills to champion change in their work and personal environments.

Prior to joining a field research project at a regional climate center, HSBC employees will have the opportunity to learn via an online program and volunteer locally on Climate Change community projects. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages 8.4 million acres of public lands in Colorado. These lands are managed for a multitude of uses including, but not limited to, recreation, energy production, mining, wildlife habitat and livestock grazing. Along with these 8.4 million acres, BLM Colorado oversees 27.3 million subsurface acres for mineral development. The incumbent serves as a temporary Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist at the trainee level in Meeker, Colorado. Provides GIS support and advice for application of geospatial technology. This position is responsible for the acquisition and management of the wide range of spatial information required to support the management of public lands. The incumbent must have an effective mix of technical skills in the geographic and computer science disciplines as well as a working appreciation of the Bureau mission and operational procedures sufficient to support Bureau of Land Management (BLM) business activities.

The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium offers school groups, families and visitors a unique view into the ocean world just outside its doors and is home to hundreds of organisms native to the Santa Monica Bay. Interactive displays, touch tanks filled with tide pool animals, a shark tank, Kids’ Corner, and a scientific microscope lab are some of the main features of the Aquarium. We offer field trip education programs, educational birthday parties, children’s marine biology classes, education programs for the public and volunteer opportunities. As Heal the Bay’s environmental education facility, the Aquarium also educates visitors about the importance of environmental stewardship and marine conservation.

The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium is seeking applications for a full time Volunteer and Public Programs Coordinator who will be responsible for scheduling, recruiting, training and managing volunteers. This position will also be responsible for facilitating birthday parties and programming during public hours. The Volunteer & Public Programs Coordinator will work Thursday through Monday (days off on Tuesday and Wednesday) and will report directly to, and work closely with, the Public Programs Manager. Responsibilities

· Schedule, recruit, train and oversee Aquarium volunteers
· Operate public visiting hours Thursday through Monday, including weekends
· Facilitate and teach educational weekend birthday parties
· Collaborate with Aquarium staff to develop and implement theme weekends, Aquarium displays and public naturalist presentations
· Write and compile the weekly electronic volunteer newsletter
· Assist with other events, programs and Aquarium needs as necessary

Qualifications

· College degree in science, education, or a related field preferred
· Outstanding communication skills
· Strong leadership and coordination skills for working with volunteers
· Excellent people skills and a passion for working with the public
· Enthusiastic, motivating and comfortable presenting information to groups of pre-K children through adults
· Well organized and able to work on several projects simultaneously, both independently and as a team
· Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
· Valid driver’s license required--driving to outreach events and meetings may be required
· Written and oral fluency in Spanish is a plus

Salary: $28,000 annually, plus benefits (medical, dental, vision and a retirement option after one year of employment)

Hours: Full-time, Thursday—Monday. (Days off are Tuesday and Wednesday.) Some evenings required.

Position Description -- The National Ocean Service (NOS) works to preserve and enhance the nation's coasts and oceans.

This person will serve on a team of policy and legislative contacts for NOS covering issues such as integrated ocean observing, mapping and charting, and ocean research and monitoring.

General Statement of Duties:

The Director of Sustainability and Energy Management will lead the effort to develop a Campus Sustainability Plan which will include a comprehensive set of goals covering Operations, Teaching, Research, and Outreach. The individual will work closely with other campus stakeholders to ensure that environmental stewardship is integrated, aligned with and supportive of the overall goals and objectives of the College. This includes working directly with senior leadership in both academic and administrative areas, as well as the Campus Sustainability Council, other governance groups, and external constituencies.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., environmental engineering, environmental science, natural resource); teaching experience in high school or community college; leadership experience in environmental initiatives, resource management, and teaching/presenting information; experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs; grant writing and management experience.

PREFERRED:

At least three years of related experience; proven record in public/private partnerships; experience in a college, non- profit, or in large, multi-unit, multi-facility setting, with an understanding of environmental best practices.

Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the campus and act as an organizational strategist in order to position Mount Wachusett Community College as a leader in sustainability in higher education.
- Be the College's representative with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in higher Education with particular emphasis on the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment to neutralize the College's greenhouse gas emissions.
- Develop annual sustainability planning priorities and budget for the campus; identify annual expected outcomes, and coordinate appropriate evaluation of these efforts.
- Produce an annual report that reviews and assesses sustainability on campus and outlines goals for the coming year.
- Integrate sustainability values and practices into the College's strategic planning processes and mission.
- Interact with counterparts at other campuses and serve as campus point person for sustainability efforts.
- Apply for and manage external grants to support campus energy conservation measures, renewable energy initiatives, and sustainability projects, research, and outreach opportunities.
- Work with consultants, contractors or Facilities Staff to collect data on energy use and develop and implement strategies for energy conservation and renewable energy projects.
- Coordinate the College's participation in organizations and agencies working on natural resource protection, greenhouse gas mitigation strategies, energy conservation, renewable energy, waste management and other sustainability issues.
- Develops, instructs and participates in student recruitment for programs in Energy Management; certificate, credit and noncredit.
- Offer guidance and coordinate with the academic community to integrate sustainability into the curriculum.
- Design and coordinate educational workshops and the production of educational materials for the campus.
- Design educational noncredit workshops to be offered through the Division of Lifelong Learning to the campus community and members of the general public.
- Work with Student Services to integrate sustainability programs into the first year experience and orientation program.
- Supervise sustainability interns and collaborate with student groups.
- Offer guidance to faculty and administrators to foster the development of research in the area of sustainability and environmentalism.
- Coordinate the college's degree and certificate program in Energy Management and teach two courses each year.
- Assist with the hiring of faculty to teach credit and non-credit courses.
- Obtain grants and coordinate administration of received grants.
- Identify opportunities to educate and involve alumni in sustainability initiatives.
- Work with other units on campus, such as the Natural Resource Program, and student groups, to develop and coordinate outreach events. Efforts should include identifying sponsors and speakers, event planning and logistics.
- Represent the College at national professional conferences.
- Supervise the development of and maintenance of the College's sustainability website.
- Work with Marketing and Communications department to promote coverage and press releases of sustainability initiatives and achievements. Develop programming and outreach related to sustainability.
