a mid-level environmental scientist to join the Natural Resources
Group in our Baltimore headquarters.
Candidates must be extremely motivated, successful project
managers, and experienced wetland delineators. Excellent communication
skills are required, both written and verbal. Experience on
linear projects in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia a plus.
Forest stand delineation, wetland mitigation design, stream
assessment, and ecological monitoring also a plus. The role
will include a mix of field and office time, wetlands and
forest assessments, document review, client interaction, agency
coordination, report-writing, state and federal permitting,
and management of others.
Minimum Requirements:

A full-time Research Associate position in Forest Soils,
Tree Nutrition, and Forest Hydrology is available in the College
of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech. The position is funded
through the Department of Forestry and the Virginia Water
Resources Research Center. The work of the Research Associate
will primarily support field research of a group of faculty
in forest soils, silviculture, tree nutrition, forested wetlands,
and forest hydrology.
The Research Associate will:
• Install, measure, and maintain field studies in forest
ecosystems throughout United States;
• Coordinate field work and associated overnight travel
in support of research projects;
• Insure that all data are properly collected and are
accurate;
• Insure that all field work is conducted safely;
• Prepare budgets and manage expenditures for field projects;
• Collect and process samples of soil, water, and plant
tissue from research trials;
• Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot field equipment
including data recorders, electronic measuring devices, and
analytical instruments used in the field;
• Assist graduate students on field portions of research
projects;
• Hire, train, and supervise undergraduate student workers
on proper field procedures;
• Assist with data management and analysis using standard
software and statistical analysis packages;
• Assist with sample archive and related database management
system;
• Coordinate maintenance of vehicles and equipment used
in field work;
• Fabricate sampling equipment used in field research;
• Prepare written reports;
• Assist with other duties as assigned by supervisor
which may include occasional laboratory and sample preparation
work.
Required Qualifications:
• Master's degree in forestry, natural resources, soil
science, or related environmental field required. An exception
may be granted for an individual with a bachelor's degree
and significant relevant experience.
• Must have the physical ability to work in rugged and
remote field locations often under adverse climatic conditions
• Must have experience with standard field measurement
procedures and equipment used in forestry
• Must be able to set up, maintain, and trouble-shoot
sophisticated field instruments used to measure trees, soils,
water, and environmental conditions
• Must be able to meet exacting standards for collecting
accurate field data under adverse conditions
• Must have the ability to multitask with excellent time-management,
peoplemanagement, and communication skills
• Must have valid driver's license.
Anticipated start date is June 1, 2007.
Non-tenure-track, two-year initial appointment; renewal is

JOB SUMMARY:
The primary responsibilities of School Programs Instructor
will be to work with the Manager of School Programs to develop
and deliver K-12 and preschool education programs for students
visiting the South Carolina Aquarium as part of the Structured
School Program and to develop and implement pre-school programs
as part of the Future Scientists program. The School Programs
instructor will work a Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday

The Rhode Island Natural History Survey seeks to hire a full-time
Wetlands Scientist to test and implement a monitoring and
assessment plan for freshwater wetlands in Rhode Island and
to improve access to relevant wetlands information via database
enhancements or applications. The Wetlands Scientist will
work closely with RIDEM and other project partners to integrate
prior work on rapid assessment methods. Field testing of assessment
methods is an important part of the job and the Wetlands Scientist
will be responsible for locating and accessing test sites,
supervising field assistants, and evaluating results. To integrate
wetlands and other data the Wetlands Scientist will work closely
with data managers at RINHS and its partners. The Wetlands
Scientist will participate in other RINHS programs and tasks
from time to time.
The successful candidate will:
* demonstrate an ability to work systematically towards
long-term goals using independent initiative as well as by
working collaboratively with partners and peers;
* have a degree (Master's preferred) in natural sciences
or related field and significant relevant field experience;
* demonstrate significant prior experience and familiarity
with wetland ecosystems and factors affecting their condition,
and with Rhode Island's flora and fauna;
* evidence strong writing and organizational skills
and an ability to work to deadlines;
* have experience supervising field assistants;
* be experienced with georeferencing equipment and
GIS software;
* have a valid driver's license and ready access to
a vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed);
The Wetlands Scientist will be based in the RINHS offices
at URI in Kingston but will travel throughout the state in
the course of work. Occasional out of state travel also required.
This is a fieldwork position requiring substantial physical
exertion and/or physical strain, sometimes in remote locations,
difficult terrain, and inclement weather. Work environment
involves exposure to job hazards where there is a possibility
of injury and/or arthropod-borne disease.
Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience. This
position is full-time for 12 months with a possibility of
extension for one or more additional years and is eligible
for RINHS's highly competitive benefits package. The Wetlands

Regional Woodland Conservationist
Redding, CT
Highstead, a regional conservation organization, natural
area, and arboretum in southwestern Connecticut, is creating
the new position of Regional Woodland Conservationist to increase
regional-scale forest stewardship and land protection across
southern New England through conservation research, outreach
and project assistance. Highstead is a non-profit organization
founded in 1982 that employs five staff members at its 100-acre
site housing superb facilities, extensive forests, wetlands,
and grasslands.
Primary Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of
the Woodland Regional Conservationist are: (1) to investigate
models and advance efforts in landscape-scale conservation,
(2) to enhance the regional and national role of Highstead
by building partnerships with individuals and organizations
focused on landscape- and regional-scale conservation, and
(3) to expand Highstead's education and communication programs
aimed at facilitating regional collaboration.
Background and Qualifications: (1) M.S. or Ph.D. in a conservation
field. (2) At least 5 years in conservation action and research,
working with organizations on regional land protection, conservation
management, and education projects. (3) Familiarity with Southern
New England geography, history, ecology, conservation issues
