accepting applications for the following position: Environmental Laboratory and Field Technician (Research Grant Specialist) in Coastal Carolina University's Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies. Position is a full-time annual appointment with benefits. This position will work with the Center's Environmental Quality Laboratory which serves the coastal and inland waters of northeastern South Carolina.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE: field sampling, sample processing and analysis, quality control procedures, instrument calibration and data management. The following parameters are routinely measured: bacteria, chlorophyll, nutrients, BOD5, organic carbon, turbidity, pH and alkalinity. Field measurements are made with in-situ meters.

Applicants should be able to participate in research cruises, train others in sampling and analytical techniques, and interact effectively with staff, students and volunteers.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in science and one (1) year related job experience. Master's degree in science and (2) years related job experience preferred. Applicant will possess strong field, laboratory and computer skills. Must also maintain a valid SC driver's license and be a strong swimmer. Duties require excellent time management and organizational skills. Must be able to comprehend technical literature such as US EPA methods and to follow standard operating procedures.

Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Must be able to differentiate colors on bacterial plates. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, move and/or lift boxes and containers weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasional work after hours and on weekends may be required.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated field technician to assist with a 3-year study of Florida mottled ducks. Field work for this project is conducted throughout south Florida. Duties include trapping and handling of mottled ducks, radio-telemetry, nest searching, data entry, and maintenance of field equipment and vehicles. Housing will be provided near West Palm Beach, FL. This year-long position will start in early August.

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in Ecology, Biology, Wildlife, or a related field is required. Applicants must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Applicants must have a positive attitude, good work ethic and communication skills. Must be willing to work independently in both urban and rural areas. Applicants must be willing to work in a hot, humid environment. Work schedules and duties will vary, so flexibility is a must. • Engage policymakers, business leaders and other stakeholders interested in oceans and coastal policy to provide expert insight into their decisions;

• Identify gaps in knowledge and lead interdisciplinary research efforts, especially at the interface of science and policy;

• Prepare timely reports, briefings and testimony for Congressional and agency staff at the state and federal levels;

• Organize and lead dialogue with experts across sectors and disciplines to find solutions to critical ocean issues;

• Work on current Nicholas Institute priorities in marine spatial planning and the Fisheries Leadership & Sustainability Forum (www.fisheriesforum.org), as well as seek opportunities to engage and be responsive to emerging issues.

• Work collaboratively with existing Institute Associate Directors and staff specializing in domestic and international fresh water, climate change, ecosystem services and North Carolina and southeast regional environmental issues.

• Manage the oceans program staff, research consultants, and student interns.

Qualifications:

• 5 years of experience working at the interface of science and policy or management

• Advanced degree in a marine science or marine policy related field

• Demonstrated experience in environmental policy, familiarity with policy players and groups in the ocean field

• Ability to effectively interact with elected officials, government agencies, academics, stakeholders groups and business leaders.

• Strong leadership skills

• Excellent communications skills and a record of publication in a range of venues are expected,

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists. Our staff of approximately 380 includes attorneys, scientists, policy analysts, and communications experts working to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.

Position Summary:

NRDC seeks a Senior Ocean Advocate to work in its Washington, D.C. office. This person will represent and advance NRDC’s Oceans Program legislative and policy priorities with Congress and the Administration. These priorities include protection of marine ecosystems, promotion of sustainable fisheries, protection of valuable ocean habitats and biodiversity, improved ocean governance and addressing the ocean impacts of global warming and ocean acidification. The Senior Advocate will develop and implement strategies to advance these priorities with Congress and the Administration. He or she will report to the Oceans Program head and work closely with the entire Oceans Team based in the New York and San Francisco offices. This person also will work closely with the Center for Advocacy Campaigns, and the Legislative Affairs and Communications Departments.

Essential Functions

- Represent and advance Ocean Program priorities in Congress and with the Administration;

- Develop and carry out legislative and campaign strategies to promote Ocean Program legislative and administration priorities;

- Comment on draft and introduced ocean legislation and develop relevant materials and analyses;

- Coordinate with NRDC’s advocacy, legislative and communications staffs to bring their expertise and assistance to bear in advancing ocean priorities;

- Coordinate with other environmental organizations working on ocean issues and help build and participate in coalition efforts;

- Engage and activate NRDC members and coordinate with NRDC-affiliated organizations, such as Environmental Entrepreneurs and the Global Leadership Council

Skills and Knowledge Requirements

- Masters or Law Degree preferred;

- 6 to 8 years of experience in advocacy-related work;

- Environmental experience preferred but not required;

- Strong advocacy skills;

- Excellent written and verbal communications skills;

- Strong interpersonal skills and experience building and working in coalitions;

The Wildlife Conservation Society seeks a bright, committed, diligent, and promising conservationist to help plan, manage and administer a large and complex global marine conservation program.

Background

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has been dedicated to conserving the earth's biodiversity since its establishment in 1898 as the New York Zoological Society (NYZS). Our efforts are concentrated in many of the world's developing countries, where biological diversity is greatest and pressure on nature is most intense.

The WCS Global Marine Program focuses on conserving outstanding seascapes - large marine and coastal areas of outstanding significance and conservation potential, principally in coral reef ecosystems - and wildlife species iconic of wildness in the seas and essential for healthy, resilient ocean ecosystems.

Headquartered in the Bronx Zoo, the Program employs approximately 100 people and has an annual operating budget of about $5.5M. Current major projects include seascape conservation in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Fiji, Belize, Kenya, and Madagascar, and species conservation focused on sea turtles (Nicaragua, Panama, western Africa), marine mammals (Africa and Southeast Asia), and sharks (Belize, Madagascar).

Position Objectives

The Assistant Director supports the strategic development and oversees effective operation of the Global Marine Program and its innovative, science-based conservation projects, currently focused in thirteen countries around the world. Specifically, the Assistant Director:

* oversees annual planning and day-to-day Program operation, including field support and administration;

* leads development of funding proposals and supports and supervises reports to funders and partners;

* provides guidance for field project development and implementation;

* facilitates communication and coordination among projects, with other elements of WCS, and between WCS and other institutions; and,

* supports the strategic development of the Global Marine Program, including developing and evaluating priorities for growth and

opportunities to increase Program impact and effectiveness.

Qualifications

Required:

* Ph.D. in field biology, conservation, or a relevant social science, or Masters Degree together with extensive relevant experience;

* Thorough understanding of marine conservation issues and relevant science and a commitment to the mission of WCS and the goals of the Global Marine Program;

* At least three years program management experience, including budget development and oversight, work plan development, staff

evaluations, and demonstrated grant-writing and financial management skills;

* Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including writing, editing, and the ability to work sensitively and productively with a diverse global team;

* Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and work on multiple projects simultaneously;

* Ability to take direction and to work both independently and as a member of a team;

* Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, adjusting to changing program priorities and responding to

opportunities; and,

* Ability to travel internationally.

Preferred:

* Experience managing a field-based, marine conservation project, ideally in a developing country;

* GIS skills; and

* Fluency in French or Spanish.

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) seeks a Resource Center Manager to lead the ongoing development and operation of its interactive, online Resource Center. Through the Resource Center, AASHE strives to provide up-to-date information about how colleges and universities are pursuing sustainability and to help illuminate best practices via how-to guides and other publications, discussion forums, wikis, and databases. Many resources are publicly available, while others are restricted to AASHE members. Planned changes to the Resource Center include streamlining the resource development and maintenance process and enabling members to contribute to resources and interact directly with each other.

The Resource Center Manager will be joining an existing team of staff dedicated to the development and operation of the Resource Center. The ability to work collaboratively and creatively within a distributed organization is vital to this position.

Duties

The Resource Center Manager will:

• Ensure that the Resource Center meets members’ needs and provides membership value

• Oversee implementation of technical tools and online resources that will facilitate member interaction and allow members to contribute content to the site (including interactive forums, blog posts, and existing and planned resources)

• Assist in the production of AASHE publications, including the AASHE Bulletin, AASHE Digest and how-to guides

• Develop metrics to measure member value and communicate the impact of the Resource Center

• Foster partnerships with other organizations, businesses, and individuals to create content, assist with publicity, and provide financial support
for the Resource Center

• Transition the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment Reporting System to a broader reporting system that allows all higher education institutions in the U.S. to report their greenhouse gas emissions and climate planning efforts

• Respond to media inquiries by providing statistics and other information from the Resource Center

• Coordinate with other AASHE programs to ensure that the Resource Center supports AASHE’s other activities

• Lead outreach efforts to encourage use of the Resource Center

• Manage customer service related to the Resource Center

• Perform other duties and tasks as necessary to support the ongoing development of the Resource Center

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Excellent writing and editing skills

• Extremely strong attention to detail

• Knowledge of and experience using information technology, content management systems, and website editing tools

• Experience developing and publishing content

• A broad understanding of, and interest in, sustainability in higher education

• Collaborative attitude and strong interpersonal communication skills

• Self-motivation and ability to work with limited supervision

• Bachelor's degree (graduate degree preferred)

• 3+ years of experience leading multi-person projects

Location

AASHE’s central office is based in Lexington, KY, but the Resource Center Manager may work remotely from a home office anywhere in the U.S. Other Resource Center staff members and interns are located in both the central AASHE office and in home offices.

Hours and Compensation

This is a full-time position. Salary is $40,000–50,000, depending on experience. Health insurance is included.

Reporting

This position reports to the Executive Director and works in collaboration with existing Resource Center and IT staff.

(IMSG, http://www.imsg.com/) is looking to hire a Coral Program Specialist to serve as an International Coordinator in the Coral Conservation Division of the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM), which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The position will be located at the OCRM headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The candidate will serve as a program specialist for international coral-related matters, supporting activities under the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP, www.coralreef.noaa.gov/). Duties will focus on program coordination and development, strategic planning, partnership building, and implementation of select projects that benefit coral reef conservation outside of the United States. This is primarily a program development and coordination position with most duties being performed at OCRM’s headquarters. Limited domestic and international travel may be required.

Responsibilities:

The contractor’s duties will include, but not be limited to:

• Leading the development of an implementation plan to achieve the CRCP’s new international goals and objectives (http://coralreef.noaa.gov/wgroups/welcome.html)

• Supporting strategic planning efforts, including identifying priority topics and geographic regions, developing performance measures, and evaluation of historic, current, and potential future CRCP international investments

• Advising and recommending to senior CRCP leadership international coral-related endeavors, projects, and partnerships

• Leading and coordinating CRCP’s support for international activities with a focus on the wider Caribbean, Micronesia, Samoa and the Southwest Pacific, and the Coral Triangle Initiative region

• Assisting with the administration of the CRCP’s International Grants program

• Developing new and expanding existing partnerships with international and foreign governmental and non-governmental entities to further coral conservation consistent with the CRCP’s new international goals and objectives

• Ensuring that all relevant reporting is completed for various CRCP agreements and statutory mandates

• Participating on behalf of the CRCP in several NOAA internal and external working groups, councils, and committees

• Supporting activities by the parent Coral Conservation Division and Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management

Qualifications:

Required:

• Master’s degree (highly preferred) or bachelor’s degree with equivalent additional experience in a relevant discipline such as marine science, biology, marine or environmental management or policy

• 2-3 years experience working in the international arena on coral reef (highly preferred) or natural resource management or science

• 3-5 years post-graduate work experience in coral reef-related scientific or management positions (may include the 2-3 years required international experience)

• Thorough understanding of coral reef ecosystems, their threats, and strategies for their conservation

• Strong verbal and written English skills

• Ability to work well individually and cooperatively with a range of individuals that are geographically separated and that represent a range of different cultures

• Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and to shift priorities as needed

• Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office programs

Strongly Desired:

• 2-3 years of program development and project planning experience

• Experience working in a matrix organization and/or demonstrated ability working in team settings

• Experience working in a governmental work environment

- Narrating public dolphin and sea lion sessions

- Transporting DolphinLab students in a 15 passenger van

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be outgoing, have excellent presentation/public speaking skills and is excited about DRC and our family of dolphins and sea lions. Candidates will have a passion to share their excitement and knowledge with our guests. Candidates will be flexible with their availability, as work schedules can change weekly (evening and week-end hours are required). Candidates must have physical agility and good balance, being able to take steep steps while climbing on and off our floating docks, being able to assist guests onto and off of our floating docks, and being able to squat and/or crouch to take photographs.

Must be able to work long days in the Florida Keys heat. The ability and desire to work with a variety of people on a regular basis is a must, especially youth. The successful applicant will be a responsible, organized, motivated, self-directed individual who demonstrates excellent “team player” skills. Applicants must have a clean driving record (helpful to have a Florida driver’s license) and computer experience. Although not required, a college degree, teaching experience and experience with animals is preferred.

The position will involve assembling, summarizing and analyzing data for a study to assess the carbon balance on a forested landscape. The objective of the project is to assemble data sets covering a 50-year period to address the changes in terrestrial carbon pools associated with changes in land use. The work may also involve the analyses of hydrology and carbon data from alpine wetlands in southern Africa. The incumbent will also conduct literature searches and summarize findings.

The positions are available for full time work during June – September, 2009. The positions will be filled at the GS3-4 range ($12.62-14.06 / hr) depending on experience.
