ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability U.S.A., a membership association of local governments focused on climate protection and sustainability seeks a dynamic, experienced Regional Manager to lead ICLEI’s Southeast Office, based in Atlanta. The mission of ICLEI is to build, serve, and drive a movement of local governments to advance deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and achieve tangible improvements in local sustainability. The Regional Manager will officially open the Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta and drive ICLEI’s mission in the region. In coordination with the Southeast Regional Director, based in New Orleans, the Regional Manager will oversee and implement the ongoing strategy and development of ICLEI’s regional scope of work and advance strategic alliances with local and state governments, non-profits and foundations to optimize the resources and service ICLEI provides to local governments in the region as well as across the United States.
The Regional Manager will supervise an existing ICLEI Program Associate that is relocating to Atlanta as part of the overall responsibility for the effective delivery of ICLEI’s climate protection activities in the region. The position will also take a lead role in furthering ICLEI’s presence in the region and ability to support and grow the membership there.
Initial salary placement is based on ICLEI’s compensation plan for managers, with a hiring salary point between $65,000 and $70,000, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, regular position that includes ICLEI’s excellent benefits package.
The job will be primarily based at the ICLEI U.S.A. Southeast Regional Office, in the City of Atlanta under a host agreement between the City of Atlanta and ICLEI. The position will require travel within the region.
Specific duties include:
• Drive the Southeast Regional Office’s strategic planning and business development efforts.
• Actively seek and pursue strategic funding opportunities through various sources to continue and expand ICLEI’s work in the Southeast and the surrounding region.
• Research and apply for grants to support the office and the member jurisdictions it serves.
• Establish relationships with regional governments and the region’s state government agencies and offices responsible for implementing climate and energy policy.
• Lead efforts to link state and local climate policy development.
• Develop regular means of communications with regional members to disseminate information.
• Organize regional workshops and trainings for local governments, state agencies, and funders.
• Represent ICLEI and its member communities at state and regional climate protection meetings.
• Oversee full- and part-time regular and temporary staff assisting regional member local governments
• Maintain an active knowledge of regional developments in the fields of climate change, emissions reduction, alternative fuels, energy policy, and other relevant areas.
Position Requirements:
Eligible applicants will possess advanced knowledge of or experience working with local governments on the topics of climate, energy, and/or other sustainability initiatives. ICLEI prefers candidates who hold an advanced degree in a technical, planning, or policy-related field and have at least five years of work experience in energy/climate, planning, transportation, waste, urban environmental issues, or related ICLEI U.S.A. Southeast Regional Manager fields OR who hold a BA/BS degree and possess 7 years of relevant experience. Applicant must possess excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, communications, and writing skills; and be able to work independently as well as collaboratively; and be willing to travel, as necessary (less than 40 percent). Ideal applicants will possess extensive knowledge of local and regional planning and politics.
Other Desirable Qualifications Include:
• Exceptional relationship-building skills and political sensitivity for working effectively with local government staff, elected officials, and funders in the region;
• A successful fundraising track record;
• Work and/or volunteer experience with local government and national environmental nonprofit organizations;
• Strong computer background, with experience in quantitative software programs, including database programs;
• Clear understanding of how to conduct a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and implement various emissions reduction programs;

One person needed for various bird research projects in Florida by Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI, directed by Dr. Ken Meyer). Primary assistance needed on a study of Great White Heron foraging and nesting ecology and juvenile dispersal in upper Florida Bay (Everglades National Park) and the lower Keys (Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges).
Starting 13 Oct 2008, ending 27 Mar 2009 (dates flexible).
Main duties will include, but would not be limited to: boating and traversing mangrove islands to observe foraging behaviors; to search for and monitor nests; and to capture, radio-tag, and track young herons (from ground and airplane). After the heron fieldwork ends in late March, there may be additional work through Jun 2009 (pending approval of funding) assisting with nest searching, telemetry, and aerial surveys of Swallow-tailed Kites, Short-tailed Hawks, and Wood Storks (in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina).
The work is challenging, sometimes frustrating, set in difficult field environments (wet, buggy, hot), and very rewarding. Applicant must be self-motivated, perform well with minimal supervision, and be comfortable working alone in remote areas. Also must be physically fit, competent, careful, patient, and have a good driving record.
Preference will be given to applicants with prior boating and nest-searching experience. Experience with radio telemetry and handling birds is helpful but not required (would work with supervisor on these tasks). Project truck and comfortable field housing provided. Salary $515/week.

Position Description:
The Coordinator will assist in implementing mechanisms to connect marine conservation science and scientists to federal policy and decision makers. The Coordinator will work with COMPASS’ Director of Science Policy Outreach in support of efforts to communicate peer-reviewed science related to the role and importance of ocean ecosystems, the threats those ecosystems face, and policy solutions to address those threats. These efforts to connect science and policy are designed to condition the public and policy climates to increase awareness and understanding of oceans to better inform federal policy. The Coordinator will also work with COMPASS’ Directors of Science and Communications and other COMPASS staff in Oregon, California, and New England to support a broad range of COMPASS efforts.
The Coordinator will:
• Track emerging marine science related to COMPASS efforts;
• Research ocean conservation and marine policy issues by synthesizing relevant science and policy from journals, reports and whitepapers;
• Track Congressional and agency activities, including bills, hearings, and rulemaking, and attend events as appropriate;
• Monitor press coverage of ocean science and related policy issues;
• Draft and coordinate distribution of materials for members of Congress and their staff, federal agencies, and other target audiences;
• Support scientists in their efforts to connect directly with Congressional and agency staff, including preparation for briefings, meetings, and other events;
• Provide general office and administrative support, including management of databases and website updates;
• Support the Director of Science Policy Outreach in other activities to connect scientists to policy discussions.
Qualifications:
COMPASS welcomes applications from candidates with strong organizational and communications skills, an interest in marine policy and/or ocean conservation issues, and a background in relevant science. An undergraduate degree (or equivalent experience) in marine conservation science or a relevant field is necessary; a graduate degree is preferred. Training or experience in policy or communications is a plus. Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and be able to handle multiple projects. Excellent written and oral communications skills are required. In addition, the candidate will preferably have:
• In-depth understanding of marine ecology or other marine science
• Ability to understand and evaluate relevant scientific concepts

We seek a candidate with energy and passion for working in our newly approved interdisciplinary program that equally engages and values the sciences, humanities, and social sciences. The director will coordinate the work of participating faculty members and chair the ES oversight committee. Ideal candidates will have experience in multidisciplinary work, published research, and demonstrated teaching effectiveness.
A Ph.D. is required in an appropriate area of science such as biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, geology, forestry, or toxicology. The director will teach four courses per year. Two are core requirements in the ES major. The first is a multidisciplinary seminar taught in partnership with other faculty members, and the second is a field-based environmental science course. The other two (one an upper-level course and the other a January-term project) will be in areas of the candidate's particular expertise and designed to support the ES program.
Candidates must have a strong background in field-based work and commitment to utilizing our newly acquired green space and facilities, which are located five miles from our main, urban campus. Facilities include a newly renovated LEED-certified building adjacent to a stream and 19 acres of protected riparian land.

Duties include:
scientific analysis of grant-related environmental pollution control strategies; development of educational publications and television and radio public service announcements; presentations to school children, professional, trade, civic, and other groups on environmental pollution reduction strategies; providing technical assistance to government, non-profit, and private sector partners regarding environmental pollution reduction; organizing, coordinating, and implementing grant-funded projects; supervising environmental intern; developing and staffing displays at public events; attending committee meetings to discuss and obtain input; preparing reports for federal, state, and local governments.
Position requires a College Degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field supplemented with five (5) or more years experience in an environmental pollution-related field, with a preference for air and/or water pollution-related experience.

The 5 years of experience criteria may be met with Master’s Degree. Conservation International’s marine program is seeking a manager to oversee day to day implementation of our rapidly expanding marine climate change program, ensuring success for our science and field implementation outcomes. Purpose of the position:
Biological monitoring of prey base fish populations in the mangrove zone of Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and the Florida Keys.
Essential Functions:
Scientific responsibilities include the field collection of mangrove zone prey based fishes using drop traps, collection of physical hydrological information, analysis of biologic and hydrologic data, and maintenance of databases. Field data will be collected by means of powerboats, row boats and helicopters. Field data collected are integrated into other center based projects including water quality monitoring, seagrass monitoring, and monitoring of wading bird populations.
Applicants may be required to work long and unpredictable hours alone, in the sometimes-harsh environment of South Florida (e.g., heat and humidity, intense sun exposure, boating in rough seas, exposure to myriad biting insects including mosquitoes and flies), Applicants must be capable of working in close proximity to crocodiles, alligators and snakes, and tolerate project mishaps like broken boats/vehicles, schedule cancellations due to inclement weather, etc. with good humor.
Additional Functions:
Other job responsibilities include maintenance of vehicles, boats, and all field equipment including fish collection nets. In addition to the duties described above, technicians will be expected to assist with other on-going projects at this research center which include seagrass surveys, as well as banding and nest monitoring of roseate spoonbills.
Relationships:

Will work closely with direct supervisor and other members of the prey base fish project.

Will have limited interaction with National Park personnel when working in the field.

Individuals who have field experience in Florida’s estuaries, mangrove forests and/or coastal wetlands, sampling and identification of fishes are desired.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Monitors and provides project coordination for wetland and stream compensation projects completed through the Virginia Aquatic Resources Trust Fund (Trust Fund). The Trust Fund is a partnership between The Nature Conservancy in Virginia (TNC) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) that provides a form of compensatory mitigation through preservation, restoration, creation or enhancement of wetlands, streams, buffers, or other aquatic resources in Virginia. The Restoration Assistant works collaboratively with TNC’s Wetland Restoration Specialist, Stream Restoration Specialist, and members of the Land Protection and Stewardship staffs in carrying out duties. Primary responsibilities include monitoring of wetland and stream mitigation projects, and conducting contractor oversight during the project activities. The Restoration Assistant is responsible for collecting and analyzing field data and the timely development of compliance reporting that is required by the regulatory agencies. The Restoration Assistant will assist in developing and implementing strategies to control invasive species on project sites consistent with success criteria for each site. The Restoration Assistant provides field support to Wetland Restoration Specialist, Stream Restoration Specialist and other TNC staff in identifying and assessing potential wetland and stream mitigation sites that are appropriate as Trust Fund projects and are consistent with the mission of TNC. This position is funded through January 2010 with the likelihood of funding beyond that date.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
• BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and one to two years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of wetland and stream monitoring techniques and protocols. Proficiency in developing and implementing monitoring protocols to evaluate site restoration performance is preferred. Experience with wetland and stream construction preferred. Ability to interpret construction design plans on-site and evaluate if construction work complies with plans preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in developing technical reports utilizing basic software packages (Microsoft Office). Requires database management skills and ability to use advanced computer functions
• Ability to identify and delineate jurisdictional wetlands per the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual is preferred. This requires knowledge of Virginia botany, soils and hydrology.
• Proficiency in analyzing, interpreting and synthesizing a variety of data including aerial photography, soil surveys, topographic maps, and site plans.
• Experience with GIS and GPS applications preferred.
• Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations, permits, and policies for stream and wetland mitigation a plus.
• Successful experience in coordinating and overseeing multiple projects, including ability to create and follow timelines and deliver products and results in a timely fashion.
• Demonstrated experience in accomplishing tasks in an orderly, organized manner and keeping organized files and records.
• Ability to identify invasive species and familiarity with a variety of control techniques.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
• Coordinate the work of others, including TNC and Corps staff, contractors, consultants, agencies, organizations, volunteers and others in carrying out duties of position.
• Develop comprehensive wetland and stream monitoring plans for project sites. Plans will include monitoring protocols for vegetation and hydrology, budgeting and project costs, monitoring timelines, and long term management of sites.
• Review completed sites to determine compliance with permits, monitoring plans, and other goals.
• Financial responsibility includes obtaining and tracking funding approvals from the Corps, developing project budgets, and tracking expenses.
• Will need to gain cooperation from individuals and groups over whom there is no direct authority in order to accomplish goals.
• May recruit and supervise volunteers and interns.
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Work closely and effectively with contractors and consultants on mitigation projects.
• Work in partnership with other organizations and individuals, including conservation groups, federal and state agencies, landowners, volunteers, and others in a collaborative or advisory role.
• Communication and presentation skills, both written and oral. Ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC and the Trust Fund to partners, landowners, prospective supporters, the public, and others.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Frequent travel around the state, sometimes with short notice. Adverse working conditions in remote locations, long hours and possible weekend work. Must have valid driver’s license, safe driving record (per TNC’s Auto Safety Program), and provide own transportation and personal automobile insurance.
• Capacity to handle complex tasks under pressure and under stringent time constraints.
• Work will require physical exertion and/or physical strain to the point of physical fatigue. Ability to tolerate heat, cold, rain, and insects in field conditions. Work environment involves exposure to job hazards.

The Biohydrologist works with the River Conservation Team to formulate and implement strategies to conserve freshwater biodiversity. Duties:
· With the River Conservation Team coordinate the development and implementation of statewide, watershed-scale conservation strategies to abate biohydrologic stresses and restore the biodiversity in selected rivers.
· Develop adaptive management plans, conceptual models, and environmental flow models that facilitate ecosystem conservation strategies and provide a scientific basis for state water planning efforts.
· Lead a diverse team of scientists, agency staff, government and industry representatives, and diverse stakeholders in developing and defining the methodologies and criteria for state water planning efforts based on environmental flows that protect biodiversity.
· Deliver bio-hydrologic tools, biodiversity data, field services, and training to Conservancy staff and partners.
· Review proposals and plans, determine the probable hydrological consequences and prepare TNC's response, in consultation with other staff.
· Translate information into formats which will enable TNC to best communicate with a wide variety of partners and decision-makers. These include local communities and citizens, local governments, state and federal agencies, universities and industries.

Position Description: Applications are being accepted for the position of Associate Director and Extension Program Leader with the Texas Sea Grant College Program, a non-academic research center within the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University. The Associate Director will provide leadership and have responsibility for coordinating the activities of the Texas Sea Grant Extension Program (TXSGE) and its personnel (currently comprising seven county marine agents and eight marine specialists) and working closely with the Director, Research Coordinator and Communications Coordinator as an integral part of the Texas Sea Grant College Program management.
The Associate Director and Extension Program Leader:
• Serves as liaison with Texas AgriLife, which co-funds the seven marine agents (in cooperation with the respective County Commissioners Courts) and the specialists who are jointly funded by Texas Sea Grant and other Texas A&M University System components.
• Assists the Director with strategic planning, strategic plan implementation and in identifying additional funding opportunities for the program.
• Develops and produces the extension portion of the biennial omnibus proposal for funding through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
• Manages the TXSGE budget.
• Serves on the Executive Committee of the state’s Coastal Coordination Council.
• Serves as a member of the national Sea Grant network’s Assembly of Extension Leaders.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
The Associate Director also represents the Texas Sea Grant College Program in regional and national meetings of counterparts from among the other 30 Sea Grant programs around the nation, and serves on state, regional and national committees and councils as appropriate.
Qualifications: A minimum Master's degree in a marine-related discipline and six years of related post-graduate experience are required. Good working knowledge of extension methods, strong verbal and written communications skills, demonstrated research and scientific writing skills. Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Ph.D. and requisite experience preferred. Computer skills with Word, Excel and PowerPoint preferred.
Location: The Associate Director will be stationed in the Texas Sea Grant College Program office in College Station, Texas

Instructors and Interns lead interpretive programs in tropical marine science for visiting schools and participate in support services required to run a residential facility.

Qualifications:
