The Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences
at the University of South Carolina is searching for a full-time
Research Specialist II to work at the South Carolina Algal
Ecology Laboratory (SCAEL). The SCAEL is located in Charleston,
SC, amidst a diverse marine research community that includes
faculty, managers, and government researchers. The position
will be primarily located in the Hollings Marine Laboratory.
The Research Specialist II will conduct research on various
phytoplankton species, including but not limited to harmful
algal blooms (HABs), with emphasis on species from SC coastal
waters. Specific duties will include PCR-based screening,
conduct high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and
maintain 2 HPLCs in good condition, identify and enumerate
SC phytoplankton species using both light and epifluorescent
microscopy, analyze water for chlorophyll, participate in
routine field sampling, perform QA/QC on reagents, equipment
and data management, and maintain phytoplankton cultures.
Background in either developing/using real-time PCR assays
or HPLC analysis, preferably in microbiology, is required.
Experience with light and epifluorescent microscopy is desireable.
Experience with a variety of software, including MS Office
and MS Access and strong laboratory skills are requred. Must
have a valid US driver's license. Must be able to work in
harsh environmental conditions (rain, mud, insects, heat,
cold, salt water).
Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in
a marine biology/oceanography, microbiology, or a related
field, or a bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2)
years related research experience; or high school education
and six (6) years related research experience.
This is a grant-funded position and includes health insurance,
annual and sick leave, and retirement. Salary range = $31,847
- $34,815, depending on experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Project Director of the South Coast Conservation Area
(Director) directs the Conservancy’s conservation efforts
on the South Coast, an area that stretches from Bandon to
Brookings and offshore out to 200 nautical miles. He/she has
primary responsibilities for developing and implementing conservation
strategies for marine, freshwater and terrestrial conservation
in this area. To carry out the conservation strategies, Project
Director must be comfortable working with and advancing strategies
from the following disciplines: science, restoration, stewardship,
public policy, funding, organizational development, and community
involvement.
The Director is responsible for creating an effective conservation
team that includes internal Conservancy staff, Conservancy
trustees, and external partners. Potential partners and leaders
in the local community include the Port Orford Ocean Resources
Team (POORT), Cape Blanco Challenge, South Coast Watershed
Council, local elected officials, state and federal agencies,
private landowners, and other non-governmental organizations.
• Implement The Nature Conservancy’s marine, freshwater
and terrestrial conservation goals for the South Coast as
spelled out in the Cape Blanco Conservation Action Plan (CAP)
and other relevant plans.
• Strategically engage with private and public partners
to develop and implement adaptive conservation strategies
that support land-sea connections in order to restore essential
salmon life histories and the habitats that support them.
• Assist the Director of Protection and Coast and Marine
Conservation Director with efforts to advance the full range
of protection tools to acquire legal interest in lands and
waters.
• Raise private and public funds to implement conservation
strategies and support local project operations.
• Coordinate community support to advance conservation.
• Oversee preserve management plans.
• Coordinate staff and resource needs with other departments
and staff in the Oregon Field Office.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years experience in
natural resource management or equivalent combination of education
and experience.
• Experience communicating with the public and/or media
both in writing and verbally.
• Experience using common software applications such
as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc.
• Experience supervising staff

Position Overview
The purpose of the Regional Outreach Coordinator position
is to implement the strategic goals and objectives of the
Council and Meyer Memorial Trust’s (MMT) Willamette
Model Watershed Program in the Santiam and Calapooia selected
sub-basins of high ecological priority. By collaborating and
thinking regionally we are able to build capacity to work
locally. Our visions are clean healthy waters with ecological
flows, native species recovered and diverse, floodplain connectivity
and healthy riparian forests, as well as stable economies
with working landscapes that support local populations, and
communities that sustain those natural resources. The Regional
Outreach Coordinator position will be an integral part of
the North and South Santiam- Calapooia Watershed Council regional
partnership that focuses on stream, riparian, and upland habitats
to restore and maintain healthy watersheds. Coordination with
all three Councils is an essential component of this position.
Recruitment of landowners for restoration and conservation
projects in high priority sub-basins will be the primary activity
of this position. The Outreach Coordinator is a full-time,
temporary position, employed by the Calapooia Watershed Council
(CWC) Board of Directors. MMT Foundation funding has been
secured through April 2010, with great likelihood of extension
for up to 10 years.
Accountability
The Outreach Coordinator shall report to the CWC Executive
Director and Board of Directors through monthly staff reports
and weekly email updates as needed, in addition to committee
and board meetings and telephone communication. The Outreach
Coordinator shall communicate directly and more regularly
to the CWC Chair(s) and Management Committee members. Outreach
Coordinator Responsibilities
Major Duties
-Communication and Partnership Meetings (15%)
This position requires coordination with numerous partners
and regional staff. A daily, on-going task is communication
with the other regional staff and contractors, including the
Regional Landowner Projects Coordinator and the Regional Monitoring
Coordinator. Attendance at monthly regional partnership meetings
is required.
-Program Budget Maintenance, In-kind Tracking and Grant Reporting
(15%)
The Outreach Coordinator will work with the Calapooia Watershed
Council’s Executive Director to develop, manage, and
maintain a transparent program budget. The Outreach Coordinator
will reference the CWC’s Fiscal Policies and Procedures
manual for fiscal management responsibilities of the Council
and Director. Assistance with grantor-required progress reports
and completion reports will be required.
-Landowner Outreach & Recruitment, Project Development,
and Grant Writing (70%)
The Outreach Coordinator will work with the regional Santiam-Calapooia
team to recruit landowners in high priority areas and stream
reaches, develop landowner projects and write grants for engineering
designs and/or project construction. Additional grant writing
may also be required for sustaining the position in the future.
Landowner recruitment will most likely necessitate the following
activities:
• Identify and partner with existing community education
providers, and in collaboration with the Council Coordinators,
build a comprehensive education and outreach program based
on existing programs (e.g. The Nature Conservancy, OSU Extension,
etc) to coordinate technical assistance, provide landowner
workshops on best management practices and schedule presentations
for council meetings
• Develop relevant and tailored presentations to community
groups such as City Councils and other county/city agencies
within the high priority sub-basin areas
• Create mailings as necessary for education events,
landowner recruitment, workshops, and tours to send to sub-basin
residents and partnering organizations
• Recruit landowners in high priority sub-basins to
attend Councils meetings, events and workshops
• Develop restoration and conservation projects with
landowners in priority sub-basins
• Recruit volunteers to assist with project implementation
• Maintain databases with landowner contact information
and project progress
• Organize tours of restoration projects on landowners’
properties for demonstration purposes in partnership with
Council Coordinators, members and partners.
• Develop media contacts to pursue monthly publications
about watershed health and Council projects and press releases
as needed in local newspapers
• Secure access with landowners for monitoring activities
• Provide material for the Councils to integrate on
their websites pertaining to the Model Watershed Program and
for landowner reference
The Regional Outreach Coordinator will work with the regional
team to identify potential partnerships and maintain existing
relationships. He/She will work closely with the Linn County
Road and GIS Departments, rural private stakeholders, federal
and state agencies, Linn and Marion SWCDs, OSU Extension,
and other regional conservation and watershed management organizations.
These partnerships require frequent communication and face-to-face
meeting time. These partners often provide technical assistance
and guidance for project development and are essential for
successful design and implementation.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
in a natural resources field (e.g. water resources, forestry,
fisheries, planning, agricultural business, or related discipline).
A graduate degree and/or experience with watershed management,
restoration, and property management planning are beneficial
but not required. A minimum of 3 years experience working
with private landowners in rural and urban areas, the farming
community, and agency stakeholders to develop conservation
and/or restoration programs or projects required. Experience
with non-profit organizations and grant writing is also desired.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
Good people skills are essential. Non-US citizens must have
proof of eligibility to work in the US.
Compensation
The annual salary for this position is competitive with local
rates and will be based on experience level. At this time
this position does not include benefits such as health insurance
or retirement.
Physical Condition Requirement
Duties will combine both indoor and outdoor tasks, requiring
the ability to work in variable weather conditions, often
on uneven ground. Work will primarily be conducted on private
lands with some overlap with public land.

The Sustainability Institute’s Energy Conservation
Corps Program Manager is responsible for managing The Sustainability

He/She reports directly to and works closely with The Sustainability
Institute’s Executive Director. This position requires

and organizational skills, and the ability to communicate

individuals, organizations, businesses, and interests. Above
all, dedication and passion for the mission of the Institute

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following
qualifications: experience as a licensed contractor in a construction
field, experience performing on-site construction work and
improvements on residential homes; and proven experience managing
a diverse employee group.
The purpose of the Energy Conservation Corps (ECC) program
is to weatherize 50 homes in the Charleston metro area over
a twelve month period from August 2009 to August 2010. The
ECC Program Manager’s main responsibility is to organize
the ECC program from concept to key. Specific duties will
include but not be limited to:
• Hiring, training and managing the ECC team ;
• Setting programmatic objectives and service delivery
processes; and
• Measuring impacts relating to the program, completing
reporting processes, and communicating successes to funders
and the general public.
The ECC Program Manager will oversee and directly supervise
the work of twenty CNCS (10 members over 2 six month periods),
AmeriCorps members and one AmeriCorps VISTA.
The ECC is a new program of The Sustainability Institute
and the ECC Program Manager will be responsible for constructing
the operations of the program to be in accordance with the
guidelines set forth by funding partners including CNCS AmeriCorps,

golf course, club house and proshop areas. Landscaping duties

Wallowa Resources (WR), located in Enterprise, Oregon, invites

and research unit, the Wallowa Mountain Institute (WMI).
Our mission is to promote and support healthy lands and communities
through knowledge, research and outreach. Education, training,
development and the application of knowledge are central to
the programs. As Director of WMI, the successful applicant
will report to the Executive Director of WR. He/she will be
responsible for the leadership, planning, administration and
management of education, research and outreach programs and
activities by WMI and for partnerships with local schools
and colleges and universities. He/she will work with and oversee
the programs of the WMI professional staff. The current programs
of work build upon a series of successful education, research
and outreach programs and educational partnerships.
The Setting:
Located in the northeast corner of Oregon at the base of
the Wallowa Mountains, Wallowa County is a beautiful setting
with diverse ecology. The County’s lands include a mixture
of both private and public lands. Private lands include farm,
ranch, forestland, and the Nature Conservancy’s Zumwalt
Prairie. Public lands include the Wallowa-Whitman National
Forest, the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, the Hells Canyon National
Recreation Area, and Wallowa Lake State Park. Major rivers
include the Snake, Wallowa, Imnaha and Grande Ronde Rivers.
The County is well known for the arts, as well as a recreational
and retirement destination. The community offers high quality

Primary Selection Criteria:

discipline or social science related to natural resources.

Salary and Funding:
Initial funding is provided by a grant from the Murdock Trust.
This grant provides full funding for the first year of this
position and partial funding for years two and three. The
WMI Director, working with Wallowa Resources’ Executive
Director, will secure additional grants and other funding
necessary to support this position and the programs of WMI.
The salary is based upon the training and experiences of the
applicant and will be a minimum of $452C000 per year plus
benefits. The benefits package includes medical, dental, paid
vacation and holidays and a 403B retirement plan.
Travel
It is anticipated that the individual in this position will
travel locally and occasionally within Oregon and nationally.

is seeking a Coral Reef and Coastal Zone Program Specialist
to serve as a Management Liaison to the United States Virgin
Islands (USVI) for the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource
Management (OCRM), which is part of the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The position will be located
on either St. Thomas or St. Croix.
OCRM houses the headquarters of NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation
Program (CRCP, www.coralreef.noaa.gov)
and Coastal Zone Management Program (CZMP, www.coastalmanagement.noaa.gov).
The incumbent will serve as the primary liaison between these
two national programs and the coral reef conservation and
coastal zone management programs in the USVI. The incumbent
will be responsible for supporting activities under both programs,
and ensuring that projects funded by each national program
complement each other within the USVI.
In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for providing
technical assistance in a relevant field, such as marine protected
area design and/or management, watershed management, social
science research and monitoring, or communications and outreach,
to be determined based on priority needs identified by coral
reef managers in the USVI. Frequent travel between islands
in the USVI is required, and several annual trips to other
locations, including NOAA headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland,
is expected.
Responsibilities:
The contractor's duties will include, but not be limited
to:
* Serving as the primary liaison between the national CRCP
and CZMP, and the territorial programs:
- Communicate national policies and guidance from NOAA to
the USVI
- Communicate USVI coral reef and coastal zone management
program needs and priorities to NOAA headquarters and other
program components
- Assist the USVI coral program with the CRCP's ongoing management
prioritization and capacity assessment processes
- Support the development, review, processing, and monitoring
of Coral Reef Management and Coastal Zone Management grants
- Support strategic planning efforts, including identifying
priority topics and geographic areas, developing program and
project performance measures, and evaluation of historic,
current, and potential future CRCP and CZMP projects
- Advise senior CRCP and CZMP leadership on endeavors, projects,
and partnerships that would be of benefit in the USVI
- Assist with the implementation and integration of select
USVI coral reef and coastal zone management projects
- Build partnerships with governmental, non-governmental,
academic, and community organizations toward shared conservation
goals
* Providing USVI, and potentially Puerto Rico and Florida,
programs with technical assistance in various topical areas
related to coral reef and coastal zone management such as:
- Marine protected area design or management
- Watershed management or land-based sources of pollution
abatement
- Social science research or monitoring
- Communications and outreach
- Coral reef or coastal zone governance, law, or policy
- Project management
* Participating on behalf of the CRCP, CZMP, or OCRM on internal
NOAA and external working groups, councils, and committees
* Supporting general activities for the relevant Divisions
and Office in which this position will report to
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
* Master's degree (highly preferred) or bachelor's degree
with equivalent additional experience in a relevant discipline
such as marine science, biology, marine or environmental management
or policy
* 2 or more years post-graduate work experience in coral
reef-related or integrated CZM management positions, with
a strong coral reef management focus
* 2 or more years of experience working on or with small
island states, preferably in the Caribbean
* Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the technical
fields listed in the job responsibilities section of this
announcement
* Understanding of coral reef ecosystems, their threats,
coastal management issues, and strategies for their conservation
* Ability to work well independently and cooperatively with
a range of individuals that are geographically separated and
that represent a range of different cultures
* Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and
to shift priorities as needed
* Fluency in oral and written English, and strong communication
skills
* Experience coordinating efforts and projects with multiple
partners
