as a Coastal Management Specialist. Located in Charleston,
South Carolina, the Center (www.csc.noaa.gov)
serves the nation's coastal resource management community
by facilitating access to and utilization of the most up-to-date
information, management strategies, and technology. This position
supports the Center's Coastal Learning Services Branch, which
works with federal, state, and local coastal resource managers
to facilitate learning and provide training opportunities
for coastal resource managers from around the country.
Duties:
The Center's projects have a strong customer focus and are
driven by the input and feedback of the coastal resource management
community. The successful candidate will be able to work on
multiple projects, demonstrate strong project management and
coordination skills, exhibit proven leadership and communication
skills, and process and organize information in a meaningful
way for the Center's customer base.
Core duties include:
Coordinate with trainers to schedule courses and respond to
external requests; Coordinate with local hosts and assist
in advertising the availability of courses; Learn and serve
as support trainer for Coastal Learning Services courses;
Assist in the development of new trainings; Assist staff and
external partners with facilitation, evaluation, needs assessment,
and scoping of new courses; Provide assistance for the Coastal
Management Fellowship Program; and
Work to maintain positive communication among Center staff
and coastal and marine management community.
Qualifications:
The position requires independent work and initiative. Some
level of experience interacting with coastal communities in
a teaching or facilitation capacity is preferred. Experience
with evaluation, instructional design and needs assessment
helpful.
Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of five years of experience
in related field, or Master's degree plus a minimum of two
years of experience in the same is required. The successful
candidate must demonstrate strong communication and organizational
skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and knowledge of NOAA
and its partners and stakeholders. The candidate must also
have the ability to work without direct, day to day supervision

NERR is one in a network of 27 sites around the U.S. and its
territories that make up the National Estuarine Research Reserve
System (NERRS.) Reserves conduct research, monitoring, education
and stewardship activities that can improve our understanding
and management of coastal areas. The NIWB NERR is operated
by the University of South Carolina's Belle W. Baruch Institute
for Marine and Coastal Sciences and is located at the Institute's

Through the Coastal Training Program (CTP), NERR sites address

Position Description:
The CTP Coordinator plans, develops and coordinates training
events and technical assistance activities for coastal decision-maker
audiences in cooperation with partnering agencies and other
reserves participating in this system-wide training program.
Specifically, the CTP Coordinator will:
1. Develop, market, and implement training activities and
provide relevant materials for coastal decision-maker audiences
to address priority coastal issues based on audience training
needs.
2. Provide or facilitate technical assistance for decision-maker
audiences. Technical assistance may involve any small group
interaction in the form of ordinance and development plan
reviews, community environmental assessments, or customized
training on specialized subjects.
3. Develop, administer and analyze periodic audience needs
assessments and incorporate the results into program planning
efforts.
4. Coordinate program evaluation and implementation of system-wide
CTP performance measures and apply results to improve the
program.
5. Serve on the South Carolina Coastal Training Coordinating
Committee and other relevant watershed, regional, or state-wide
coordinating bodies and provide regular program updates to
committee members, program partners, and other training providers.
6. Contribute to annual action plans and performance reports
for the NIWB NERR, prepare program summaries and presentations
for regularly scheduled meetings of the NIWB NERR Advisory
Committee, and participate in NERR CTP activities at state,
regional, and national levels including participation in NERR
System-wide integrated workgroups, NERRS Annual Meetings,
and NERRS CTP meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in environmental science field with at
least four years of relevant work experience, or, Master's
degree in environmental science field, coastal resource management,
or environmental policy with at least two years of relevant
experience is required. Knowledge and experience in coastal
ecosystems, coastal management or policy, and education program
development, implementation and evaluation is also essential.
Candidates should also have excellent verbal and written communication
skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a
team, and to the ability to communicate effectively with adult
audiences one-on-one and in small and large group settings.
Familiarity with planning and regulatory processes at the
local level, facilitation experience, website design/ maintenance,
and data base design skills and experience are highly desirable.
Funding and Salary:
Full-time, grant funded position. Salary: $32,012 - $35,000,
depending on experience. Health insurance, annual and sick

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH
The Cape Eleuthera Institute and Cape Eleuthera Island School
are seeking an individual to connect primary research and
high school education as the Assistant Director of Research.
This position has recently been created to help facilitate
and manage rapid growth in research, education, and outreach
programs occurring at the Cape Eleuthera Institute and The
Island School.
The position is based on Eleuthera, Bahamas. The successful
candidate will work with the Director of Research to help
oversee research programs at The Cape Eleuthera Institute
and connect primary research to education and outreach at
The Island School (www.islandschool.org).
Duties:
The Assistant Director of Research will be responsible for
managing on-the-ground research operations, addressing research-related
inquiries, participating directly in on-going research programs,
and act as a mentor to research staff, both at the Cape Eleuthera
Institute and The Island School. The candidate will also represent
the Cape Eleuthera Institute and The Island School at workshops
and conferences, help market the use of the facilities at
CEI for primary research and university-level courses, and
work to uphold our philosophy of connecting primary research
to education and outreach to promote conservation. Lastly,
the candidate will assist the Director of Research in grant
writing and manuscript preparation.
Minimum Qualifications:
M. Sc. in tropical sciences, fisheries, resources management,
environmental science, or related fields, plus an additional
three to five years of practical experience in research and/or
education. Candidates should have ample experience conducting
marine and/or terrestrial field research, have a working knowledge
of common ecological monitoring techniques, be proficient
at experimental design, and have a strong background in statistics.
Candidates must also have experience writing and editing
scientific manuscripts, and preparing research grants. Candidates
must be comfortable living and working in a remote, small
island community. An interest in integrating primary research
and education in addition to prior teaching experience will
be an asset.

General Description:
The Assistant Director of Research serves as a principle
research supervisor for the Cape Eleuthera Institute and The
Cape Eleuthera Island School, and as an assistant to the Director
of Research. The Assistant Director of Research is responsible
for managing research programs operating at The Cape Eleuthera
Institute, assisting with the final construction and management
of the research labs and flow through seawater system, coordinating
the use of The Cape Eleuthera Institute by visiting researchers
and courses, and participating directly in certain ongoing
in-house research programs. Research conducted under the auspices
of the Cape Eleuthera Institute focuses on tropical marine
and terrestrial environments, sustainable resource use, and
sustainable design and development. Current research programs
include aquaponics, patch reef surveys related to a proposed
marine protected area, offshore aquaculture, recreational
fisheries, flats ecology, ethnobotany, archeology, and sponge
ecology and aquaculture. Other responsibilities include assisting
the Director of Research in project development, grant writing,
and manuscript preparation.
The Assistant Director of Research is also responsible for
providing leadership and mentoring research faculty and students
at The Island School. The Island School is an experiential
education/place-based semester abroad program in for high
school sophomores and juniors from the U.S. and Bahamas. Students
partake in a full curriculum during their 3 months stay (e.g.,
math, art, science, etc.) plus they actively participate in
a research project that is intimately connected with research
programs operating at the Cape Eleuthera Institute. Students
are involved in all aspect of the research process which culminates
in the writing of scientific papers and an oral presentation
during The Island School Research Symposium at the end of
each semester. Specifically, the Assistant Director of Research
will assist faculty in honing project ideas, designing scientifically
sound experiments and/or empirical studies, train faculty
in sampling/monitoring techniques, tutor faculty in basic
ecological statistics, and regularly join student research
teams in the field to support Island School faculty. The Assistant
Director of Research is also responsible for providing workshops
to students on paper writing and oral presentation skills.
In addition, the Assistant Director of Research is responsible
for coordinating the student research symposium held at the
end of each Island School semester.

The Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) is a global community
of conservation professionals with over 12,000 members (resource
managers, educators, government and private conservation workers,
informed members of the public, and students) dedicated to
advancing the science and practice of conserving the Earth's

The SCB seeks a Policy Director (PD) to fill two critical
roles: to participate directly in the policy process and to
empower the membership by providing them with the information
and skills necessary to influence the policy process themselves.
Generally the PD is responsible for coordinating all policy
activities of the Society, is expected to maintain an office
in the Executive Office of SCB in Arlington, Virginia, and
reports to the Executive Director. This position requires
significant abilities and experience in communications, a
broad understanding of SCB's mission and philosophies, sensitivity
to maintaining an objective role for SCB scientists in the
policy arena, and a clear vision for SCB's role in influencing
conservation policy and compelling ideas on how to achieve
it. The position requires initiative, flexibility, and the
ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. A major
focus of this position in the first two years will be policy
related to North America.
Responsibilities:
* Serve as representative of the SCB, displaying tact, consideration,
and discretion in all interactions with other members of the
SCB community, SCB partners, and the public.
* Provide leadership and strategic direction for policy activities.
* Bring attention to pending policy issues that warrant scientific
involvement. The PC will work with the SCB leadership to craft
and implement official response to such issues.
* Work with SCB leadership and membership to develop proactive
policy initiatives that emerge from cutting-edge conservation
science, such as commenting on federal rulemaking, providing
expert witness testimony, briefing legislators and staffs,
and creating background documents for use by policy-makers.
* Explore and enhance opportunities for collaborative activities
with other organizations.
* Design and implement mechanisms to keep SCB members apprised
of conservation policy issues, and enable the membership to
engage in policy through training opportunities and web-based
policy toolkits.
* Other duties and tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Working knowledge of conservation science and ability to
communicate with conservation researchers.
* Successful track record conceiving and implementing policy
activities, building partnerships among NGOs and working directly
with federal lawmakers.
* Master’s or Ph.D. & 3+ years experience with policy
activities at the national or international level.
* Excellence in written communication, oral communication
and interpersonal skills. Must be able to synthesize voluminous,
complex and diverse material into information that audiences
will find understandable, engaging and compelling.
* Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently
with minimal supervision.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with a wide
range of people. Demonstrated sensitivity and discretion in
all aspects of work.
* Energetic, non-confrontational demeanor, proven management
and leadership experience, and excellent organizational skills,
with the ability to coordinate and prioritize among many tasks
and responsibilities.
* Ability to identify and act on useful outreach opportunities.
* Computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Office and
internet browsers.
* Experience and proficiency in web site maintenance highly

Duties and Responsibilities
This position will be the person primarily responsible for
overseeing the development, drafting, and implementation of
the management programs and plans for Florida’s Coastal
and Aquatic Managed Areas, a system of 37 marine protected
areas (MPAs), four freshwater protected areas, 3 National
Estuarine Research Reserves, the Florida Keys National Marine
Sanctuary, and the Coral Reef Conservation Program.
This position requires independent action, extensive environmental
science and managerial knowledge and experience and good communication.
The area of responsibility includes the individual site management
plans and a management program framework that cuts across
CAMA by issue area (e.g. Ecosystem Science, Public Use, Human
Resources). The management program teams consist of
CAMA employees across the state who help identify, develop
and prioritize CAMA’s activities, procedures and policies.
This includes making sure all the programs and management
plans are staying on track, the components are fitting together,
and CAMA staff understands what their roles are in the process.
This includes:
· Develop and oversee the schedule of management plan
reviews that will occur beginning October 2006 and continuing
over the next several years. Will require involvement from
initial scoping to preparing plans for final approval.
· Coordinate the public stakeholder involvement phase,
which includes public scoping meetings and public review of
draft documents to ensure that a broad audience of stakeholders
are informed, appropriately noticed and encouraged to participate.
· Develop and execute the budget for the management
program and plan review processes. This will include
oversight of grants and contracts.
· Coordinate the activities of the management program
teams. This includes the development of procedures,
policies, and priorities that are to be reflected in annual
operating plans and out-year strategic plans.
· Become CAMA’s “expert” in the
processes used by other government agencies that have gone
through similar efforts to learn from their experiences.
· Ensure all CAMA staff understand their respective
roles in the entire management program and plan processes,
are clear on what the schedule is what the expectations are
and what the time deadlines are.
· Due to field staff workload issues, work cooperatively
with field staff to minimize impact to the field staff as
much as possible. Discuss with the Director any significant
tasks you would like to delegate to the field staff.
· Ensure that management programs and unit management
plans are in compliance with office, departmental and applicable
state and federal laws, policies and procedures.
· Ensure that field staff are being consistent in
their interpretations of CAMA rules. This will include ensuring
that Tallahassee and appropriate field staff are involved
in any significant policy decisions regarding rule interpretation
and that those decisions are communicated to the field.
· Ensure that CAMA is represented on all ERP teleconferences.
· Ensuring that CAMA has commented on any DEP rule
changes that could impact the Aquatic Preserves. This should
include field staff input.
The incumbent will serve on the Senior Management Team for
the Office of Coastal and Aquatic Managed Areas. This
will allow the incumbent to connect activities across all
sites and with other state ocean and coastal activities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of management principles and techniques; the terminology,
principles and analytical techniques of the physical or natural
sciences with special emphasis on research, stewardship and
monitoring in coastal environments. Ability to manage
an environmental planning program; supervise people; work

The Charles Darwin Research Station solicits applications
for our open position of Researcher in the Control and Eradication
of Introduced Vertebrates. We are seeking a research-oriented
individual to join our restoration ecology programs for the
Galapagos National Park. The successful applicant will be
responsible for designing, implementing, and realizing projects
aimed at discovering efficient means by which the Galapagos
National Park Service can monitor, control, and eradicate
island populations of alien vertebrates. We seek an individual
committed to the preservation of natural island-ecosystems
who can work well at the interface of applied research and
the management of protected areas in a multi-cultural setting.
The natural ecosystems of the Galapagos archipelago are threatened
by a variety of introduced species. Goats, pigs, cats, rats,
dogs, donkeys, cattle, horses, and mice are the most widely
distributed alien vertebrates within the National Park; there
are also problems with introduced frogs, fish, and birds.
Our current priorities for research in control and eradication
are goats, cats, rats, pigs, dogs, and mice; and these are
the species we expect to be investigated first. The Researcher
in the Control and Eradication of Alien Vertebrates will work
directly within our vertebrates section. The successful applicant
will have a research graduate degree with a PhD (or masters
degree with five years of experience), research experience
in the control and eradication of alien vertebrates, be able
to speak and write well in Spanish and English, and have experienced
living and working in remote settings.
The initial contract will be for one year, but will be renewable
subject to further funding. While we envision hiring at the
post-masters or post-doctoral level, we welcome applications
from established researchers interested in spending sabbatical
leaves at the CDRS. Transportation to and from Galapagos will
be provided. Base salary is US $24,000 to US $28,000 p.a.,
according to qualifications and experience.

The USC Wrigley Institute is hiring for two (2) Education
Program Assistant positions to begin November, 2006.
Job Duties:
- Under the supervision of the WIES Director of Education,
Education Program Assistants will:
- Help implement several WIES education programs for local
schoolteachers, students, other educators and the general
public, including: COSEE-West, QuikSCience Challenge, and
Edison Challenge.
- Assist in the development of marine science activities
and lesson plans for K-12 teachers.
- Teach and assist with summer science programs at the Wrigley
Marine Science Center on Catalina Island.
- Assist with coordination of education programs in various
school districts in southern California, with a particular
focus in counties surrounding the Los Angeles area.
- Help coordinate the annual Ocean Science Bowl regional
competition (“Surf Bowl”) hosted at USC and serve
as a mentor for teams in our diversity program.
- Work as a member of the Education team as needed to create
opportunities that will enhance, expand or benefit education
programs at local schools, aquariums and science centers.
- Assist in the development of content for use on the Wrigley
Institute educational websites.
- Conduct literature searches as needed on various marine
science topics for the purpose of developing educational material.
- Represent the Wrigley Institute at education conferences
or meetings, which may include giving presentations or coordinating
displays.
- Work with other Wrigley Institute staff to develop outside
funding proposals for education projects.
- Assist with producing a quarterly science education newsletter
and other publicity materials.
Qualifications:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a marine or other
natural science discipline is required. Must have a
sound understanding of basic science principles and marine
science content (extensive experience may be considered in
lieu of degree in natural sciences). At least 1 year
experience teaching marine science in a formal or informal
setting, and experience working with K-12 teachers.
Should be able to demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office
Suite, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience
with Photoshop and InDesign is also helpful. Excellent
written and verbal communication skills are essential (applicants
may be asked to submit a writing sample), as is the ability
to follow instructions and complete assignments in a timely
fashion. The successful candidate will be a creative
thinker, self-motivated, very organized and be able to work
under the pressure of deadlines. Applicants should be
willing to work some nights and weekends, and occasionally
spend extended periods of time (1-2 weeks) on Catalina Island,
particularly during summer months. Knowledge of local
marine life and habitats is desirable.
Other Requirements:
Driving throughout the greater Los Angeles/Orange Counties
on a regular basis using own car (mileage is reimbursed);
Some bending and lifting; Some nights and weekend work is
required; Moderate to extensive walking and other physical
activity, such as snorkeling and kayaking, is also required.
These are grant-funded, FTE positions. Annual salary
is $32-34,000.
