M.S. in oceanography, geology, coastal engineering or related field is preferred. | Gulf of Mexico Alliance
Regional Coastal Training Program Coordinator for Coastal Decision-makers
Position Description:
The full-time Gulf Regional Coastal Training Program Coordinator will help the five Gulf Coast National Estuarine Research Reserves’ (NERRs) Coastal Training Programs (CTP) in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas connect the needs of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (Alliance) Priority Issue Teams, the Gulf states, and local communities to provide targeted professional workshops. These projects will engage local communities, raise awareness about the Alliance, and result in activities that improve the health of the Gulf of Mexico and its citizens. This position will be full-time and grant funded for a minimum of one year with three years of funding anticipated.
The project tasks include:
(1) gathering local and regional input and assessing existing documents, including Alliance Priority Issue Team documents and outcomes from community stakeholder meetings, to determine the needs of both coastal communities and the Alliance Priority Issue Teams;
(2) conducting professional and technical workshops for decision-makers that directly support the Priority Issue Teams, address Gulf-wide issues while meeting the needs of local resource managers; and
(3) working on a website for the project to advertise trainings, post results of trainings, and perform other tasks as needed.
The CTP provides a concrete method of consistently conducting workshops across the Gulf that presents science-based information to coastal decision-makers. This model for sharing successful strategies from location to location involves local communities in a meaningful way. The five NERRS on the Gulf Coast (Mission-Aransas in Texas, Grand Bay in Mississippi, Weeks Bay in Alabama, Apalachicola and Rookery Bay in Florida) will host most of the workshops at their facilities and other locations in coastal counties within their regions of service. The workshops will require coordination with and/or training by NOAA partners such as the Coastal Services Center, Gulf Coast Service Center, Coastal Restoration Center, Sea Grant Programs and other NOAA programs that are involved with Alliance support. Other partners such as the National Estuary Programs in Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida may also collaborate on workshops to expand the geographic scope of the audiences and communities reached.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, or environmental education, land use or conservation planning, marine or coastal science or policy, communication, a related field or commensurate experience;
Excellent communication and organizational skills including the ability to translate science for professionals and non-scientists including coastal decision-makers;
Proficiency in computer programs such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel; and a willingness to participate in the development and management of internet resources such as a homepage for the program;
Experience and skills with working with diverse audiences including facilitation and outreach experience;
Ability to organize meetings, events, workshops and/or conferences, including program evaluation and project management experience;
General knowledge of coastal issues, science and/or policy;
Ability to work with limited direct supervision while accommodating the preferences and direction from off-site coordinators with whom he/she will be working regularly;
Valid driver’s license, with three year clean driving record; and
Ability to travel within and out of state.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, or environmental education, land use or conservation planning, marine or coastal science or policy, communication, a related field;
Experience and skills related to web development and management including but not limited to graphical design, coding, multimedia resources, and search engine optimization (SOE) protocol;
Advanced knowledge of coastal issues, science, and/or policy; and
Previous experience working with agencies and organizations in close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.
Physical Requirements:
Moderate Work: May frequently exert force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 25 pounds and/or occasionally exert force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 50 pounds. These physical requirements are not exhaustive, and additional job related physical requirements may be added to these by individual agencies on an as needed basis. Corrective devices may be used to meet physical requirements. These are typical requirements; however, reasonable accommodations may be possible.
Salary Range: $33,000-40,000 commensurate with experience
The Gulf Alliance Regional CTP Coordinator will work at Weeks Bay Foundation under supervision by the Weeks Bay and Grand Bay CTP coordinators. The job will require frequent in and out of state travel. The position is a contract position beginning immediately with funding for at least one year with the possibility of three years and will be subject to all standard requirements for employment. In addition to salary based upon experience, a stipend is provided for benefits and other fringe.

Job Summary:
Duties will be divided with 40% time (two days per week) supporting routine aquarium operations that includes assisting with the preparation of food for a variety of marine organisms, and feeding the animals. Assist the senior curator in monitoring & treating animals for disease or injury. Assist with cleaning aquaria in a manner that does not harm the animals (adhering to a monthly schedule). Also assist with the maintenance of equipment; testing & verifying that air pumps, water pumps, auxiliary filters & aeration stones are functioning properly. This individual will be capable of providing 100% operations support as needed during the senior curator's absence due to leave or illness.
The remaining 60% of time will be devoted to expanding educational opportunities for the general public visiting the Marine Extension Service's aquarium, nature trail, and interpretive cabin. The educational facet of this position is to be divided at 20% teaching, 20% public relations, and 20% aquarium program development & management. Probable work week = Tuesday through Saturday (flex hours to accommodate new programs)
Principal objectives for this position:
Provide assistance and backup support for aquarium operations; Increase visitation (= income) to MECA's "public" aquarium and nature trail areas; Develop public programs for "Saturday Explorations at the Aquarium;"
Develop educational material for nature trails for self guided tours for teachers; Ensure that all signage is educationally and scientifically accurate; Developing rotating exhibits for display in the aquarium; Seek private donations and/or grants to support aquarium operations; Develop a Public Relations and recruitment strategy to bring more visitors into the aquarium and increase revenues; Expand the Center's web presence center around aquarium and nature trail to increase public awareness and visitation;
Develop and write articles to submit to local new publications; Provide public talks at libraries to encourage visitation; Manage education sales shop and aquarium volunteers.
The aquarium MUST be checked 365 days of the year to confirm that systems are functioning. Must have a willingness to work weekends, holidays, & above and beyond the call of duty when emergency situations arise (the animals' well-being is of utmost priority). This responsibility is shared between several employees, but aquarium personnel are charged with oversight of weekend & holiday duties.
Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in the sciences, and considerable experience in field and laboratory work; including experience in performing experimentation and research studies; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification required: BS in natural sciences, biology, marine sciences, ichthyology, aquaculture, fisheries or related area.
Min 5 years of experience as a full time aquarist or an equivalent position & must have verifiable small boat handling & crew experience.

About the Position
The ERC Outreach Coordinator will coordinate pre-college outreach plans for the FREEDM Systems Engineering Research Center, a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded project that involves a partnership among NC State University, Florida A&M University, Florida State University, Arizona State University, and Missouri University of Science and Technology. Duties include implementing activities of the Center, coordinating efforts among partner universities, and working closely with Center administration and researchers to bring science and engineering concepts related to production and distribution of renewable energy to pre-college students. More specifically the Outreach Coordinator will assist with planning, implementing, managing and reporting pre-college outreach activities for the center which include Research Experiences for Teachers, Young Scholars (high school student internships), coordinating activities with rural NC middle and high schools, with other outreach coordinators of The Science House, and planning and presenting pedagogically sound science, mathematics, and engineering content using hands-on, inquiry-based teaching methods.
Experience and Requirements

The Coastal Conservation League is a non-profit conservation organization supported by 5,000 members with a staff of 30 in offices in Charleston, Beaufort, Georgetown and Columbia. Terms:

Primary Function:
To serve as a liaison between the South Carolina Legislature and League and its members regarding issues of interest to the organization.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Research, monitor and analyze legislation and state regulations
• Work closely with legislative staff and program managers to determine the League’s position and strategy on specific legislative issues
• Collaborate with legislative staff and program managers to influence legislative outcomes by communicating with members of the General Assembly, media representatives and the general public.
• Manage efforts of the program staff, interns and grassroots volunteers who are working on issues for which he/she has been assigned primary responsibility
.• Officially represent the League throughout the community on issues for which he/she has been assigned primary responsibility
.• Attend public meetings and hearings to gather information and/or represent the League’s interests, including testifying on issues as needed at legislative committee hearings.
• Help determine when and how to mobilize external constituencies and communicate with members and partners through weekly legislative updates and action alerts.
• Work closely with other leaders in the conservation community to make sure that the necessary alliances and relationships are built and maintained.
• Help coordinate effective media campaigns on legislative issues.
• Provide support for the weekly Conservation Lobby Teams.
• Participate in the planning of legislative events such as lobby days, member outings, educational workshops and press conferences.
• Maintain effective working relationships with governmental bodies, conservation partners and allies, foundations and major donors.
Organizational Relationships:
Administratively reports to the Legislative Director and/or the Director of Conservation Programs. Work with and aide other legislative staff and volunteers on various projects.
Minimum Position Requirements:
Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; 2-4 years of experience working in a similar field; BA/BS, preferably in political science, public policy, communications or environmental studies/science; understanding of environmental issues and the various constituents involved; the ability to work independently; and willingness to travel and work non-traditional hours.
Experience and political relationships in South Carolina is preferred.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission serves as a forum for interstate communication and coordination on water related pollution control efforts among all the New England States and New York State.
The Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS) is currently a network of six real-time observing stations in the Hudson Estuary, eastern New York State. Water quality (temperature, specific conductance, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, water level) and meteorological data (air temperature, solar radiation, rainfall, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, wind gusts) are automatically measured every 15 minutes and uploaded hourly to a publicly available web site (HRECOS.org). Pumping systems will be installed at some sites so that chemical measurements (PCBs, PCDD/Fs, pesticides, PAHs, mercury, organic carbon), can be made. Each site is operated by a site manager, and the web site is run by a web manager. HRECOS is now operated as a pilot project on a voluntary basis by NYSDEC, USGS, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (Columbia University), Stevens Institute of Technology, and the Hudson River Foundation. It is anticipated that the capacity of the system will be upgraded over time and that a governance structure will be established for future operation of the system after its initial pilot period. Funding support for the position of HRECOS Coordinator is provided by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Incumbent operates with substantial independence of action and delegation of professional decisions within his or her area of activity. Job performance is evaluated by Simon Litten, NYS DEC, in consultation with Rebecca Weidman, NEIWPCC.
JOB SUMMARY: An Environmental Analyst is needed to coordinate the overall HRECOS program and to be the principal point of contact with observing stations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Monitor web outputs and alert site managers to possible problems.
• Assist in the implementation of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Quality Assurance/Quality Control Procedure (QA/QC) for all HRECOS sites.
• Rapidly analyze and interpret real-time data to disseminate current findings in a timely manner.
• Participate in sampling for toxic chemicals, ship samples to labs, evaluate lab data, populate database.
• Communicate with governmental, academic, consulting, and general publics.
• Manage the HRECOS budget.
• Participate and assist in additional Hudson Estuary projects including the Contaminant Assessment and Reduction Project (CARP) and other related projects.
• Participate in supervised research resulting in participation in conferences and in publishing scientific and technical papers
The satisfactory performance of the above duties and responsibilities requires the incumbent to have a thorough understanding of the NEIWPCC’s and the NYS DEC’s programs, organization, and policies, to exercise initiative and resourcefulness in complicated situations, and to be able to work effectively with state and federal contacts at both staff top management levels, and with varied professional backgrounds. The ability to organize workload, and perform tasks in an accurate, conclusive and timely manner is required.
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
A Master's Degree in oceanography, geology, environmental chemistry, or related fields.
License
Valid driver’s license. Access to personal transportation.
Experience
Applicants must have at least (A) five years of full-time, or equivalent part time, technical or professional experience, of which (B) at least three year must have been in a professional capacity or, (C) at least one year must have been in a supervisory, managerial or administrative capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the following substitutes:
Substitutions:
I. An Associate’s degree with a major in any of the fields listed above may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
II. A Bachelor’s degree with a major in any of the fields listed above may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.

Special Knowledge and Skills
• Excellent computer skills including proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and database software.

• Excellent organizational skills, able to work and solve problems in the structured environment of a large agency.

Environmental Factors
Considerable travel throughout the Hudson River area; such travel and other expenses will be compensation for at the approved New York State rate. Ability to operate a light truck.
