SUMMARY
OF POSITION
The
Regional Vegetation Ecologist oversees projects that involve
ecological monitoring design and implementation, vegetation
classification and mapping, and accuracy assessment. Much
of the work conducted by NatureServe Southeast ecology staff
involves implementation of the International Ecological Classification
Standard (including the U.S. National Vegetation Classification
and Ecological Systems Classification) for conservation applications
primarily in the southeastern United States.
The
work associated with this job description will be completed
in partnership with federal agencies such as the National
Park Service in conjunction with state Natural Heritage Programs,
the central ecology program of NatureServe, The Nature Conservancy,
independent contractors, private non-profits and granting
agencies.
S/he
is supervised by the Senior Regional Ecologist (Southeastern
U. S.).
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.
Develop rare plant and ecological monitoring protocols with
federal partners. Specific duties include project management,
protocol development, field work to test methodology, and
some data analysis (75-85%).
2. Complete accuracy assessment reports of newly completed
vegetation maps (5-10%).
3. Perform ecological sampling, and inventory with a special
emphasis on plant communities (5-10%).
4. Classify and describe ecological communities and vegetation
types (0-20%).
5. Manage ecological data (5-10%).
6. Analyze vegetation data both qualitatively and quantitatively
(5-10%).
7. Provide science support for conservation planning efforts
(0-10%).
8. Develop proposals for future projects (0-5%).
9. Develop, supervise, and coordinate other projects as needed,
such as community inventories, vegetation mapping, and conservation
planning efforts. Coordinate efforts of short term, contract,
and project staff as needed (5-10%).
QUALIFICATIONS
Training
and Experience:
* Masters Degree or Ph.D. in Ecology, Plant Ecology, Botany
or closely related field, and experience in the classification
and description of vegetation; or equivalent training and
experience.
* One year's experience (academic training in statistics can
substitute for some job experience) in quantitative ecology,
statistics or related field.
* Ability to communicate effectively with a statistician and
manage statistically valid ecological monitoring design and
sampling based on partner needs.
* Familiarity with standard Microsoft Office software for
word processing, spreadsheets, database management (i.e. Microsoft
Access), presentation graphics, and some statistical analysis
software.
* Experience with ArcView, ArcGIS or other GIS software.
* Specific experience with SAS, SYSTAT, S-PLUS, R or other
statistics software and/or familiarity with PC-ORD or JUICEsoftware
for the analysis of multivariate ecological data.
Knowledge
and Abilities:
* Ability to effectively manage multiple projects.
* Record of setting and meeting productive work goals and
deadlines, and ability to complete projects requiring exacting
attention to detail.
* Superb communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work independently with some work as part of

Additional
Preferred Skills:
* Knowledge of the plant species composition, environmental
characteristics, and distribution of the vegetation communities
of the southeastern United States.
* Experience in the collection of structural, compositional,
and environmental information on vegetation communities in
a variety of systems.
* Experience in plant taxonomy and the ability to field identify
most plant species encountered in sampling.
* Familiarity with aerial photography interpretation, interpretation
of other resources such as soils and geology maps is desirable.
Experience in substantial parts of the southeastern United
States is desirable.
* Experience with biodiversity inventory, data management,
and conservation planning activities in the context of Natural
Heritage Programs (or CDCs) highly desirable.

The
incumbent serves as an oceanographer in the Satellite Oceanography
and Climatology Division (SOCD), Ocean Dynamics and Data Assimilation
Branch, Laboratory for Satellite Altimetry (LSA). SOCD is
responsible for research and development of operational satellite
products for monitoring and predicting the ocean environment;
generating satellite-based data sets for ocean assessment
and assimilation into numerical models; developing satellite
instrument calibration procedures; planning new satellite
instruments; demonstrating applications of satellite data
to problems in both the coastal and open ocean; and transitioning
developed techniques and products into operational production.
LSA specializes in the measurement of sea surface topography
by radar altimetry for use in a wide range of scientific studies
including ocean currents, oceanic heat transport, seasonal-to-interannual
variability, climate change, global sea level rise.
The
incumbent conducts scientific research and supports operations
related to satellite altimeter missions such as Jason-1, Envisat,
and Geosat Follow-On. This requires working at the interface
between the sponsoring agencies (e.g. NASA, French and European
Space Agencies, U.S. Navy) and users of the data within government,
academia, and public sectors. Specifically, he/she generates
ocean analyses and carries out research, working closely with
the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilations (NOAA/NASA/DOD)
to develop new techniques for assimilating altimeter data
into ocean models for the purpose of improving short and long-term
forecasts. This requires an understanding of physical oceanography,
marine geodesy, coastal and open-ocean processes, and how
to model the ocean-atmosphere system. The incumbent designs
and conducts research projects, authors scientific papers
for publication, makes presentations at conferences. He/she
serves as a NOAA representative to interagency and intergovernmental
satellite working teams, and participates in the planning
of future satellite altimeter missions for which NOAA shares
responsibility, specifically the US/French Jason-2 program
and the DOD/NASA/NOAA National Polar-Obbiting Operational
Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS). The successful candidate
will be considered one of NOAA's foremost experts in the application

This
position is part of a GIS team in the division of wildlife
management. They will work closely with the GIS team leader

duties of this position include: annual production of the
160 maps for the game lands map book, develop and maintain

in the development of GIS/GPS training materials for all division
employees, train division employees in GIS applications, and

Stewardship Director reporting to the University's Senior
Executive Vice President. This position will be funded for
three years during which time the Director is expected to
design and implement a well-crafted program for stewardship
efforts across the university. The broad goals of this program
are (1) fostering a culture of respect for the environment
among students, faculty, and staff and (2) minimizing the
institution's environmental footprint. Extension of the position
past the third year is contingent on the success of efforts
to that point.
Columbia's
vision for environmental stewardship relies on distributed
ownership of related management efforts and on a broad program
of education and involvement for students, faculty, and staff.
The Director is responsible for overseeing, assisting with,
and monitoring activities across Columbia while working always
to encourage local initiative and to improve local competencies
through mentorship.
The
Director's primary responsibilities include developing a stewardship
scorecard for the university; identifying and prioritizing
areas for further effort; recommending the adoption of new
policies and procedures; developing short term and long term
strategies; educating the university on best practices in
environmental stewardship; preparing detailed proposals including
budgets for all stewardship projects; preparing or assisting
in the preparation of grant, rebate, or incentive funding
proposals as appropriate in support of stewardship projects;
overseeing and tracking the success of projects; supervising
related internal and external communications; and facilitating
and supporting the activities of the Columbia Environmental
Stewardship Task Force. All projects will be implemented by
and must be developed in partnership with the responsible
university department.
The
Director will serve as the university's primary analyst for
environment-related activities. In this role, the Director
must comfortably manage both the high-level plan for Columbia's
efforts as well as the details of each specific project proposed
or undertaken. The Director must successfully evaluate and
communicate the costs and benefits attendant with all related
initiatives.
This
position will report to the Office of the Senior Executive
Vice President. It is not an academic posting and is in no
way responsible for the university's environment-related academic
programs. The Director, however, may assist faculty and others
in the development of curricula and other academic activities
as requested.
Bachelor's
degree in a related field required. Minimum 7 years' related
work experience with proven success in a leadership role required.
Demonstrated involvement in and contribution to the field
of environmental or natural resources policy and/or management
required. Strong analytical capabilities including expertise

Summary (General Description):
The
Wilderness Society seeks a GIS analyst to join our Center
for Landscape Analysis. This is an exceptional opportunity
for a GIS professional to apply their scientific expertise
to real world land conservation and management challenges
and work in the nexus between science and public policy. We
seek a GIS professional who can apply their GIS and natural
sciences skills to perform GIS analysis and develop cartographic
products to further our federal land management and conservation
projects.
The
primary goal of this position is to provide GIS support for
our Forest Service programs in our Pacific Northwest and California/Nevada
offices. This position will be a part of multidisciplinary
teams and provide science-based GIS analysis to aid in the
forest management planning for both regions. The position
will also join the team of scientists making up our Center
for Landscape Analysis (CLA) - a subset of our Ecology and
Economics Research Department. Ten to Twenty percent of this
position will be allocated as needed for transfer and application
of the regional work to the national level and to other regions.
Initial
work will involve supporting off road vehicle (ORV) management
planning in the forests of California and strategic conservation
planning in the North Cascade forests. The GIS work will involve
the collection and preparation of GIS datasets, performing
GIS analysis, developing cartographic products, and creating
text products stemming from the spatial analyses. The work
will also involve working closely with interdisciplinary teams
of staff including ecologists, regional conservation specialists,
and communications specialists. Among many issues we expect
the work to involve are ORV and recreation planning, transportation
management, habitat fragmentation, roadless area protection
and wildlife protection. The position will be responsible
for developing analytical products to illustrate threats to
the forest landscape and improved management solutions that
address those threats.
At
a minimum, the ideal candidate will have a master's degree
in the natural sciences (including GIS training) and 2 to
3 years experience in the application of GIS in the natural
resource sciences. More extensive experience may be substituted
for the advanced degree. Experience with forestry and ecology
is also highly desirable. Familiarity with the non-profit
conservation advocacy community is preferred. This is an entry
level science position within The Wilderness Society and compensation
is competitive with University programs.
Primary
Duties and Responsibilities:
o
Work closely with program teams and partner organizations
to develop and integrate GIS work serving the goals of the
program.
o Assemble, edit, and organize GIS data sets for new projects.
o Perform spatial analyses for forest management and conservation
planning using ArcGIS and related software such as Fragstats,
CommunityViz or Google Earth.
o Write up the results of GIS analyses in fact sheets, science
briefs, reports, and other forms of communication.
o Generate maps for posters, reports, PowerPoint presentations

This is responsible professional work in the implementation
of natural area management plans and land restoration activities
designed to improve the ecological health of District lands.
CHARACTERISTIC
FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
The incumbent in this position: participates in natural habitat
management and restoration projects by designing custom seed
and plant mixes necessary to re-introduce native species to
district lands undergoing ecological management.
The
incumbent manages the operation of the District's seed processing
facility as well as supervising part-time staff, volunteers
and interns in collecting and processing native seeds. The
individual is responsible for the design, purchase and preparation
of all native seed mixes used in the implementation of District
Natural Ecosystem Management Plans. This person also prepares
and presents programs on natural resource management activities
to interested members of the public, staff and other professionals
on a routine basis.
The
incumbent is responsible for planning, supervising and conducting
biological inventories associated with vegetative resources
on District lands including baseline plant surveys, vegetation
sampling and rare plant monitoring.
WORKING
CONDITIONS:
This is a physically demanding job that requires a sighted
individual (vision corrected to 20/20) to conduct visual inspections
of native plants and ongoing or planned land restoration projects
as well as to perform significant scientific research regarding
native and rare plant species. Possible work hazards include
herbicides/pesticides, operation of power equipment and/ or
smoke/wild fires from controlled burns on District lands.
This work also requires an individual with normal hearing
[corrected to within a normal audible range] for interacting
with employees and for significant contact and interaction

Training
and Experience Requirements
Possession
of a master's degree in biology, zoology, or a science curriculum
related to area of expertise and three years of experience
in specialty area; or an equivalent combination of education
and experience.

Prior
work experience with captive aquatic animals. Proven ability
to work effectively as a team member. Experience in writing
and reviewing grant proposals. Familiarity with funding agencies
such as sea grant and the national science foundation. Experience
in boat operation and scuba certification is preferred.

How

The
Nature Conservancy's Florida Keys Program seeks a Marine Conservation
Program Manager. The Marine Conservation Program Manager develops,
manages, and advances conservation programs, plans, and methods
for South Florida's marine species and natural systems. This
position provides technical leadership and support to projects
of The Nature Conservancy's (TNC) Florida Chapter, Southern
U.S. Region, Mesoamerica and Caribbean Region and Global Marine
Initiative.
