DESCRIPTION:
The Redlands Institute is an applied research division of
the University of Redlands (www.redlands.edu)
that integrates emerging information technology with science,
management and policy research conducted for grant and contract-funded
projects. GIS Technicians perform data management and mapping,
digitizing, surveying and technical writing.
Duties
include but are not limited to the following:
·
Assists GIS staff in the generation of plots, analysis of
data, development of new data, distribution of GIS data and
products, collection of data with GPS units, and editing spatial
data.
· Uses ESRI's ArcGIS tools to inputs edit data, and
to prepares and produces various maps, related geographic
database information, and other GIS tools and products.
· Assists in developing geographic database structure,
tables, forms and reports. Produces maps and graphics as needed.
Quality-control GIS deliverables.
· Provides assistance to student interns on various
GIS activities.
· Compiling FGDC compliant metadata documentation.
· Performs other duties and special projects as assigned
or directed.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in geography, cartography,
GIS, or closely related field with emphasis on GIS for spatial
analysis and mapping applications, plus one (1) to two (2)
years experience in geographic information systems or a related
field. Successful candidate must possess knowledge of GIS
that includes ArcGIS and spatial-relational databases. Must
possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills,
have high energy, good judgment and the ability to communicate
in both verbal and written form. The selected individual must
be self-motivated to work independently, exhibit good leadership
skills, have an ability to meet deadlines, work well under
pressure, and possess innovative problem solving skills. Must
possess strong verbal and written communication skills and

Hydrologist
Position: The USDA Forest Service Center for Forested Wetlands
Research will be hiring a term (expected 3 years) Hydrologist
for its duty location in Charleston, South Carolina. This
position will provide professional support in the research
program focused on hydrology, water quality, and water management
including studies related with their interactions with land
use, management practices, and natural disturbances, specifically
in the forested landscapes of the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
The employee in this position will participate in various
research studies spanning from hydro-meteorologic and biogeochemical
processes and transport, field experimental design and monitoring,
hydrologic and water quality modeling of the forest eco-systems,
design, development, and implementation of best management
practices (BMPs) to achieve Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs)
for impaired water bodies. Duties include establishing field
experiments, hydro-meteorologic and water quality monitoring
stations, data collection, quality control, management, analysis,
and reporting. One of the primary duties of the selected individual
will be to assist the unit's research hydrologist in project
coordination and meeting scheduling with various collaborators
and stakeholders, preparing quarterly project reports, and
supervising works among land owners and contractors in installation
of the recommended BMPs. The selected candidate will also
be partially responsible for the coordination and delivery
of information to stakeholders through education programs,
outreach meetings, and workshops as related to BMPs and the
TMDL process.
Qualifications
include a Masters' degree in hydrology, soil science, hydro-geology,
Civil or Agricultural or Environmental or Ecological Engineering
(soil and water emphasis), natural resources, or similar environmental
sciences. The abilities to work both independently and as
a team member for completing project tasks with a detailed
eye and on time are essential. Knowledge of hydrologic cycle,
forested ecosystems and application of GIS tools is highly
desired. The incumbent may work together with researchers
from universities, state and federal agencies, private land
owners and industries on various projects. Good oral and written
communication skills are mandatory.
Other required experience are: working on personal computers
(emails, Web browsing, data downloads and sharing) and Microsoft
application including data processing tools, tools for producing
various Tables and graphical plots, presentations (e.g. Powerpoint),
software for statistical analyses. Incumbents with a knowledge
of hydrology and water quality models and some basic programming
knowledge of SAS, BASIC, FORTRAN, C++ would be desirable.
The applicant should also be willing to work in the field
in harsh weather conditions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens,
have a valid driver's license, and a good driving record.

Biotoxins Program in Charleston, S.C. is seeking a full-time
Coordinator for the Southeast Phytoplankton Monitoring Network
(SEPMN). The Program educates a four-state regional volunteer
network of schools, universities, community groups, aquariums,
and parks/recreational facilities on harmful algal blooms
(HAB) while expanding the knowledge of phytoplankton that
exists in coastal waters. Additional information about the

Working
with the SEPMN program staff, the incumbent will build strong
ties with constituent groups and research partners and assist
with possible network expansion throughout the U.S. This is
a contract position based on two-thirds community outreach

such as newsletters, brochures, and classroom activities.
One-third of this position will be data management and creation
of web site content for the SEPMN.
Minimum
Qualifications:
The
position requires a B.S. in science or education with working
knowledge of biology and chemistry or marine science. Experience
in outreach and education is essential. A background in general
data management, such as Microsoft Access and GIS is important
but not necessary. Work consists of tasks that require skill
in field collection techniques as well as laboratory techniques
and procedures.
Additional

DUTIES:

candidate will provide database and GIS support to monitoring

and effectiveness of the HCP's Operating Conservation Programs.
Duties of the Data Manager/GIS Technician will include but not
be limited to:
Develop and maintain databases and GIS for compilation, storage,
and analysis of monitoring data
Import and input spatial data to establish baseline information
on terrestrial and aquatic habitat conditions
Complete GIS queries and analyses as part of investigations
Maintain timber harvesting plan review tracking database
and GIS layers
Maintain electronic compliance monitoring forms and prepare

collection, documentation, and reporting
Provide technical assistance, trouble-shooting, and training
to monitoring staff
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Specialized course work in database
design and management and GIS applications required. Bachelor
of Art or Bachelor of Science from a four-year college or university,
in Wildlife Biology, Fisheries, Forestry, Zoology, Biology,
Ecology, Geology, Natural Resource Conservation or a closely
related field preferred. Experience: Must have a minimum of
one year of related experience in a combination of database
management, GIS, and report writing. Experience or training
in aquatic habitat assessment, biological inventory, and/or
monitoring preferred. Knowledge: Proficiency in database design
and management, Excel, Access, ArcGIS 9.0, ArcView 3.X, Pathfinder
Office, and global positioning systems (GPS) applications. Working
knowledge of Visual Basic, remote sensing data and aerial photograph
interpretation, biological inventory, and forest practice in
California preferred. Abilities: Must have demonstrated ability
to communicate successfully with a wide variety of individuals,
both verbally and in writing, and to work collaboratively as
a team member. The successful candidate must be energetic, self-motivated,
assertive, and possess the ability to work independently and
follow through with project tasks.

Community Outreach Specialist for the Phytoplankton Monitoring
Network's new affiliation in Maryland. The position will be
stationed at the Oxford Cooperative Laboratory in Oxford, MD.
The Phytoplankton Monitoring Network currently educates a four-state
regional volunteer network of schools, universities, community
groups, aquariums, and parks/recreational facilities on harmful
algal blooms (HAB) while expanding the knowledge of phytoplankton
that exists in coastal waters. Working with the network's coordinator,
the incumbent will build strong ties with constituent groups
and research partners and assist with possible network expansion
throughout the U.S. This is a contract position based on two-thirds
community outreach with responsibilities including assistance
with training workshops for volunteer groups and development
of outreach materials such as newsletters, brochures, and classroom
activities. One-third of this position will be data management
and creation of web site content.
Minimum
Qualifications:
The
position requires a B.S. in science or education with working
knowledge of biology and chemistry or marine science. Experience
in outreach and education is essential. A background in general
data management, such as Microsoft Access and GIS is important
but not necessary. Work consists of tasks that require skill
in field collection techniques as well as laboratory techniques
and procedures such as microscopy use and phytoplankton identification.
Additional requirements include exceptional oral and written
communication skills, and a willingness to work independently
as well as with others. The position will require some weekend
work and significant travel will be required. Salary depends
on experience and education.

Position
Description:
The
mission of the NIWB NERR is "to promote stewardship of
the North Inlet and Winyah Bay watersheds through science and
education." The Stewardship Coordinator helps the NERR
achieve this mission by facilitating and promoting the integration
of research, education and management activities around priority
resource issues in the North Inlet and Winyah Bay estuaries
and their surrounding watersheds. As such, the Stewardship Coordinator
plans, develops and coordinates resource conservation and management
projects and associated outreach activities for the North Inlet
- Winyah Bay NERR in cooperation with the other NERR team members
and community partners.
Specific
duties include:
1.
Plan, develop and coordinate resource management and conservation
projects for the Reserve in collaboration with the NERR team
and key community partners and volunteers. These activities
include, among others:
o
facilitating the development of a watershed plan for the North
Inlet Estuary,
o monitoring native and invasive species and implementing restoration
science projects as needed, and
o developing and implementing coastal land conservation strategies

Develop and apply GIS tools and products to address resource
conservation issues. Examples of GIS products in development
include an impervious cover analysis for the North Inlet watershed
and land classification analysis for the NIWB NERR.
3.
Recruit, coordinate and supervise students and volunteers to
work on resource management projects and coordinate related
stewardship outreach activities.
4.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with
agencies and organizations that have management responsibilities
in the NERR and surrounding watersheds, track relevant permit
applications that may impact the NERR, and provide science-based
information and recommendations to the NERR Manager and appropriate
agencies to protect or improve habitat and water quality in
the NERR.
5.
Contribute to annual action plans and performance reports for
the NIWB NERR, prepare program summaries and presentations for
regularly scheduled meetings of the NIWB NERR Advisory Committee,
and participate in NERR stewardship activities at state, regional,
and national levels including participation in NERR System-wide
integrated workgroups, NERRS Annual Meetings, and NERRS Stewardship
Coordinator meetings.
Knowledge/Skills/Expertise
Required:
Bachelor's
degree in an environmental science field with at least four
years of relevant work experience, or, Master's degree in an
environmental science or marine policy field and at least two
years of relevant work experience. Knowledge of and skills in
coastal ecosystems, watershed planning, and coastal policy and/or
coastal resource management. Experience with GIS software and
ability to create products using GIS data layers for resource
management applications. The position also requires excellent
verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work
cooperatively with a team and independently with minimum supervision.

on restoring the herbaceous component of longleaf pine plant
communities, including the biology of rare plants. The employee
in this position will participate in research studies at various
field locations across the Southeast, as well as in gardens,
greenhouses, and growth chambers. Duties include establishing
field studies, supervising sampling crews, collecting, managing,
and summarizing data. The employee will have opportunities to
assist in developing research studies and work independently
on studies that fall within the scope of the research work unit's
mission.
Qualifications
include at least 1 year of graduate training in Botany, Ecology,
or a related field, or the equivalent experience. The abilities
to work independently and to complete projects on time are essential.
Competency with plant identification and with database and statistical
software are required. Experience working in southern pine forests
is desirable. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a valid
driver's license, and a good driving record. The position is
a permanent full-time appointment associated with the recently
established Longleaf Pine Ecology, Restoration and Management
