SUMMARY
OF POSITION
The
Conservation Information Coordinator provides support to the
MD/DC Chapter's conservation team by managing processes, timelines
and information related primarily to land protection. S/he
manages and maintains conservation databases and manual files,
assists land protection staff with due diligence tasks required
to complete land protection transactions, and produces maps,
graphs and reports for a variety of uses by conservation staff.
S/he recruits, trains and supervises volunteers as needed
to accomplish job duties. The Conservation Information Coordinator
is supervised by the Conservation Information Manager and
supervises no staff.
DUTIES
1)
Populate and maintain the Conservation Land System (CLS) database.
Enter and quality-control data regarding the Chapter's land
protection activities, monitored easements and deed restrictions,
hunting licenses, and farm leases. Run software upgrades and
fixes as necessary. Participate in CLS conference calls and
listserve.
2)
Prepare land protection project packages according to current
TNC standards. Gather information from Project Managers, populate
required fields in CLS, produce reports from CLS, compile
legal documents, create maps using ArcMap and/or CLS, and
obtain required approvals and signatures.
3) Prepare transfer packages for properties to be conveyed
from TNC to a government agency or other conservation organization.
Compile legal documents and financial information required
by the agency or organization in order for TNC to transfer
the property and receive appropriate reimbursement. Maintain
contact with staff at the cooperating agency in order to track
the progress of transfers.
4) Maintain current knowledge of TNC policies and procedures
related to land protection transactions, vendor contracts,
and grants for land protection. Provide a checklist of due
diligence requirements and a library of current forms for
use by protection staff. Assist protection staff in completing
due diligence forms and obtaining required reviews and signatures.
5) Order surveys, appraisals, and Environmental Hazard Assessments
(EHAs) as requested by land protection and/or land management
staff.
6) Populate and maintain the Chapter's Access-based protection
project tracking database, in order to report the negotiation
status and financial details of land protection deals.
7) Serve as the initial point of contact for "cold calls"
from landowners interested in selling their land. Assist Project
Directors and/or Senior Scientist in completing Land Inquiry
Routing Forms and create maps to accompany them.
8)
Populate and maintain Conservation Action Planning (CAP) data
in the Excel-based CAP tool.
9)
Produce maps and other graphic products and reports for Conservation
staff, including acres protected scorecards.
10)
Maintain manual protection files, including files for grants
related to land protection (e.g. Rural Legacy).
11) Assist the Conservation Information Manager with digitizing
and map production using the Chapter's ArcView-based geographic
information system (GIS).
12) Handle other land protection and land management related
activities as needed, such as applying for tax exemptions
on purchase properties.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
1)
BA/BS degree in biology, geography, computer science, paralegal,
or a related field and two to three years of related work
experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
2)
Demonstrated database and computer based management experience
including managing, maintaining and populating databases and
manual files, and producing reports from databases.
3)
Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g. Word,
Excel, Access, Web browsers). Experience with ArcView or ArcMap
preferred.
4)
Ability to manage and prioritize tasks from multiple sources,
in order to produce quality results in a timely manner.
5)
Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to
detail.

Hall Programs is the marine science education department of
the Dauphin Island Sea Lab located on Dauphin Island off the
coast of Alabama. Participants in Discovery Hall Programs
include K-12 students, teachers, visiting colleges, Elderhostel

DHP program also maintains the public educational aquarium,
the Estuarium. Dauphin Island's beaches, wetlands, as well
as Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico provide a variety of
ecosystems ideal for field-based, hands-on marine science
learning experiences.
Responsibilities:
Conduct
classes, which consist of multimedia lectures, lab and field
activities. Field activities include beach and dune walks,
wet activities at both the beach and marsh, and vessel trips
into Mobile Bay and Gulf of Mexico. Weekends, evenings, and
some holiday work are required as well as overnight travel.
The job will also involve working as team in proposal/curriculum
writing, implementation and grading.
One
of the primary responsibilities of this position will be to
staff BayMobile, the Sea Lab's Outreach Program. Two weeks
of each month will be spent on the road traveling independently
to various locations with BayMobile. Responsibilities the

2006.
Outreach
Coordinator will be responsible for grassroots organizing
and will reach out to citizens and community leaders across
the state. The position will involve frequent travel and extensive
interaction with diverse groups of West Virginians. Outreach
Coordinator will report to Campaign Coordinator, and work
closely with the Coalition's steering committee to build public
support for Wilderness designations on the Monongahela National
Forest through a variety of methods. The focus of this work
will be in communities in and near the forest, but work will
also be done throughout the state including the Eastern Panhandle,
Morgantown and Charleston. The Outreach Coordinator will work
to ensure that appropriate leaders in West Virginia such as
elected officials, scientists and business leaders are educated
about Wilderness with the goal of procuring their support
for the campaign in various ways. The Outreach Coordinator
will help ensure that feedback to West Virginia's Congressional
Delegation is leveraged in an effective, timely manner.
Responsibilities:

grassroots letters in support of Wilderness targeted at WV
Congressional Delegation and US Forest Service
-Coordinate the activities of already established local wilderness
groups
-Work to increase participation among these local groups through
active recruitment
-Monitor media and generate appropriate feedback/response

letters to the editor, placing opinion editorials (OpEd's),
and phone calls.
-Organize and participate in phone banks when necessary.
-Organize and help lead volunteer outings for campaign volunteers,

wilderness areas.
-Organize, schedule and conduct meetings with politically
influential individuals/groups to provide information and

-Design and implement actions/events to demonstrate broad
based support for wilderness to various elected officials

Qualifications:
A Bachelors or Masters degree preferred. Strong grassroots
organizing experience and working knowledge of political campaigns,
wilderness designation and public lands management is desired.

INTRODUCTION
The
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), the nation's
largest national sanctuary, encompasses more than 5,300 square
miles of central California coastal waters that contain a
rich array of habitats and marine life. The Sanctuary program
provides protection of these natural resources through research
and education to foster public understanding and stewardship
of this nationally significant marine area.
The
Sanctuary, through a contract with the Monterey Bay Sanctuary
Foundation, requires the expertise of an Education Specialist
who will serve as the on-site education and outreach professional
at the sanctuary satellite office in Santa Cruz, CA.
II.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The
candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation
of projects and activities designed to meet the education
and outreach objectives of the Sanctuary. Major duties include:
o
Take a lead role in the management of establishing the "Sanctuary
Visitor Center" in Santa Cruz including fundraising planning,
interpretation, and architectural and operational aspects
of the center and subsequent maintenance of facility.
o Generate interpretative tours and programs; assist with
organization and administration of Sanctuary education workshops
and events. This will include volunteer programs, special
projects and functions, newsletters, program updates and general
correspondence.
o Create and distribute literature, films and other material
designed for public awareness and education of NOAA, NOS,
and the National Marine Sanctuary Program in general, and
the Monterey Bay Sanctuary in particular, and establish an
on-going network of resources related education programs and
products which can be shared with the public and in schools.
o Conduct on-site interpretive tours for schools and special
interest groups; develop and present interpretive programs,
assist with organization and administration of Sanctuary education
workshops and events, and coordinate volunteer programs for
special projects and functions.
o Develop materials and implement Sanctuary related programs
that further Sanctuary management goals by direct outreach
and education of the public on key issues, i.e. Sanctuary
Currents Symposium, wildlife disturbance prevention programs
(Team OCEAN), Sanctuary Research Expeditions, and public monitoring
programs.
o Represent the Sanctuary with MBNMS portable displays and
materials at public events such as Whalefest, Sanctuary Festivals,
marine lab open houses, etc. al.
o Order and maintain necessary equipment and materials for
Sanctuary displays at public events and symposiums (including
bulletin boards, physical displays, interpretative literature,
announcements, etc.).
o Coordinate and build upon existing regional, state and national
marine education programs. Attend meetings of the Santa Cruz
Sanctuary Interagency Taskforce working with taskforce members
as an expert. Work will include the implementation of the
northern portion of the Sanctuary Scenic Trail (Seacliff to
Davenport), and Scenic Trail development efforts from Seacliff
to Pacific Grove (as a lead member of the Interpretive Working
Group).
o Other duties may include maintenance and development of
Sanctuary website material, review and evaluation of educational
permit applications, and other specific duties assigned by
Sanctuary Superintendent.
III.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
o
An undergraduate degree in a related field is required (a
graduate degree is preferred), and two years of related work
experience in the fields of marine science, estuarine, coastal
and resource management regarding issues inherent to Central
California Coastal region. Knowledge and experience in physical
and biological science, laws, regulations, programs and guidelines
related to environmental management is also required.
o Knowledge of a broad range of federal and state authorities
relating to marine management conservation.
o Knowledge and proven ability as an Educator related to public
speaking, presentation and communication techniques. Skill
in communicating complex technical subjects or controversial
agency policies for professional or lay audience utilizing
media, exhibits, messages and themes. Professionalism and
experience in dealing with politically important government,
state and community representatives is also helpful.
o Excellent writing and communication skills are required
to assess problems and recommend policies and actions, and
to work effectively with other agencies and groups. Candidate
will be required to lead multi-disciplinary task forces, develop
recommendations, prepare clear and well organized written
reports and represent office policies in public arenas in
support of Sanctuary related issues.
IV.
PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS
The
Public Outreach Specialist position is located at the Monterey
Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) satellite office in
Santa Cruz, CA. The MBNMS is a part of the National Marine
Sanctuary of the National Ocean Service (NOS) within the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The
candidate for this position needs to be an independent self-starter
who works well with others as required, while maintaining
close contact with Sanctuary Personnel. This position is a
term employment role of a one year period with the possibility
of extension based on performance and financing. Candidate
needs to be available during the business day and, on occasion,
will need to work evening hours or weekends for special events
and projects. The work is conducted in office settings and
in the field, including boats and small airplanes.
Salary
is commensurate with experience and includes health benefits
and insurance. Paid leave for vacation and bereavement is
based on current schedules.
