| COLLEGE OF
CHARLESTON SEMESTER PROGRAM IN CUBA September -
November 2006 A unique opportunity to study on-site in Cuba, one of our nearest, most significant and exotic neighbors. Cuba blends the experience of cultures -- African, European, American --which creates a unique environment that students will be able to experience by enrolling in courses taught by College of Charleston faculty as well as Cuban scholars. Students will be exposed to an array of cultural activities and study trips designed to encourage direct interaction with the Cuban people. The program is designed to allow students to further their Spanish language skills as well as learn about the rich heritage of Cuba as reflected in its, culture, economy, political and social history, art, music, literature and rich natural environment. Classes will be held in Vedado at the Casa Memorial de Salvador Allende in conjunction with the Instituto de Filosofía. Several study-visits and day trips with cultural activities and lectures will be an integral part of the student experience while in Cuba. |

SPAN 201
Intermediate Spanish (3
cr.) EXPRESS I
Develops a basic proficiency in
Spanish and familiarity with Hispanic
culture through practice in the use of the basic language skills and
acquisition of vocabulary. Prerequisite: SPAN 201: placement, SPAN 102
or 150
SPAN 202 Intermediate Spanish (3 cr.) EXPRESS II Develops a basic proficiency in Spanish and familiarity with Hispanic culture through practice in the use of the basic language skills and acquisition of vocabulary. Prerequisite: SPAN 202: placement, SPAN 201 SPAN 328 Spanish Language Study Abroad (3 cr) Spanish Language Study Abroad (3) Designed to develop confidence incommunicative skills and greater facility in dealing with ideas in Spanish through study in a Spanish-speaking country. NOTE: Local resources of the foreign country will be used. Students can take this course to satisfy the SPAN 313 or 314 requirements. POLS 321 Politics of Latin America (3 cr.) Politics of Latin America surveys political and related economic and social dynamics in Latin American nations. |

103 Introduction to
Contemporary
Cuba (3 cr.)
A multi disciplinary introduction to 20th century Cuba, its civilization and culture including politics, economy, social history, and the arts. Study-visits, day trips, special lectures by Cuban scholars and guided study tours to museums, natural parks, Villa Clara province among other sites will be an integral part of this course. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. LACS 300/POLS 339 ST: The Cuban Revolution (3 cr.) An in-depth examination of the course of the Cuban revolution. Lectures and interviews will be combined with field trips and excursions to noted historic sites of the revolution. e.g. Santiago de Cuba, Santa Clara, Bay of Pigs. LACS 300/POLS 339 ST: Social Movements in L.A. (3 cr.) An examination of th recent rise of social movements in Latin America. These courses are open to students of all majors at the College of Charleston. Courses are designed for students of Spanish, history, political science, art history, architecture, urban studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and others who can apply this study towards their degree programs. To qualify for admission and licensing for travel to Cuba, applicants must be degree-seeking college students. Accepted applicants are sponsored by the College of Charleston and will come under its license granted by the United States Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control. This program and all educational and academic activities have been granted a license by OFAC. |
PROGRAM COST
The
comprehensive program fee** is estimated at $4750 for all
students. The fee includes round-trip air fare from Charleston,
South Carolina to La Habana, lodging and two meals per day in La
Habana, lodging and some meals during study trips, all ground
transportation within Cuba (except personal trips), and entrance fees.
Tuition not included in this fee. ** Final fee
will be based on prevailing
economic conditions |

Special Features * Students will have the unique opportunity to study and live in Cuba for ten full weeks and earn 12 or more hours of credit *Limited
opportunity to live with Cuban families for advanced Spanish students * Classes will be taught by College of Charleston faculty and Cuban scholars from several academic institutions in Cuba through the Instituto de Filosofía in La Habana. * Some classes will be conducted at the National Botanical Garden, Expo Cuba, Casa las Americas, Casa de África and the Instituto de Filosofía among other sites. *Opportunity to explore and study Cuba's rich African heritage. * Opportunities to meet with Cuban university students. |
