| The Program in Latin
American
and Caribbean Studies at the
College of Charleston offers an interdisciplinary and
multi-disciplinary program featuring a Major and Minor in Latin
American and Caribbean Studies. The Major and Minor include
courses in a number of disciplines as well as a core course in Latin
American and Caribbean Studies. The Major consists of 30 hours in Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies courses with not more than 12 hours in any one discipline (excluding LACS); no more than 15 hours at the 200 level, excluding LACS 101. Students must fulfill their language requirement in Spanish or Portuguese. Students must also double-major in a non-interdisciplinary field, i.e. History, Political Science, Hispanic Studies, etc. Students are encouraged to spend one summer or semester in a study abroad program in Latin America or the Caribbean. ****Students delcaring a LACS major in Fall 2009 must take an additional 6 hours (or the equivent) of language - either Spanish, Portuguese or French and earn at least 6 credit hours in a Study Abroad program approved by the LACS faculty. The Minor is comprised of 18 credit hours: 9 hours of required courses and 9 hours of electives. LACS 101 Introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies may be used to fulfill the Humanities or Social Science General Education Requirement. |
