What is your academic background?

Amanda:
I studied for my BA at King’s College London. In the UK you decide what you want to do as soon as you enter, and I focused on Classics, with a more direct focus on Roman Imperial History and Latin.

Joi: I have a BA in History from Elon University

What do you see yourself doing five years from now?

Amanda: I am interested in working in a museum as a curator. I love the idea of educating people through materials, rather than just reading. I am sure my direction will change many times in the next year or so.

Joi: I hope that I will be in a Ph.D program by that time.

Hobbies or Interests?

Amanda:I love riding horses, and have a mare in England who I hope to ship. Swimming (when I have the time) and just having down-time where I can relax and socialize.

Joi: Reading of course. Also writing, exercising and traveling.

Favorite Quote?

Amanda:

“My friends, as I have discovered myself, there are no disasters, only opportunities, and indeed, opportunities for fresh disasters" (Boris Johnson, Mayor of London)

Why did you choose the College of Charleston Graduate History Program?

Amanda:
I visited Charleston as a tourist and fell in love with the city, as is the case with so many people. I was coming to the end of my undergraduate degree in London, and decided that this would be the perfect shift in direction for me, especially once I found out what a strong history department the College had.

Joi: I had done research on Charleston's free black community a couple of years ago which made me really interested in the city. When it came time to think about graduate programs CofC seemed like a great choice to continue in my research area.

What has been the best part of your work here in the graduate program?

Amanda: Being able to have one-to-one time with professors – this was something that I never had as an undergraduate. Also, being able to look at such a wide range of historical topics, rather than being limited to just one genre or geographical er

Joi: I really enjoy getting to know different faculty members in the history department especially those I haven't had a class with.

What is one thing that no one knows about you?

Amanda: I am a compulsive tidier! (But prefer it is someone else does it and I can enjoy the benefits!)

Joi: I am absolutely addicted to reading.  Unfortunately that doesn't always include the academic books that we are assigned.  I've definitely had to learn how to juggle.
