Internship Program

The Goal . . . to initiate internship opportunities that provide students with a coherent and cohesive program of integrated learning experiences to support their academic, social, and personal development while attending the College of Charleston and studying within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs.

What is an Internship?

An internship is defined as a carefully monitored (in this case by both a representative from the College of Charleston and by an individual within the place of internship) work or service experience in which a student has specific learning goals and can reflect upon those opportunities.

During a student’s tenure at the college, internships provide knowledge about a certain field of study or work allowing for a more informed decision about major and career choices.  Learning activities most common in internship settings are goal setting, observation, reflection, evaluation, and assessment.  Interns coexist with company employees in a structured environment working within the parameters of a learning agenda that is devised, and agreed to, between the intern and the internship host.  This learning contract shapes the goals of the student’s specific learning agenda.
