SAMPLE LESSONS

Charleston Latin consists of two sets of instructional materials. The first set, Marcus et Julia, introduces Roman family life and such themes as the roles of family members, how the Romans lived, dressed, ate, worked, entertained and educated themselves. The second set, Fabulae Antiqui et Novi Mundi, introduces Greco-Roman mythology as it pertains to the origin of the universe, the successive generations of the Titan and Olympian gods and goddesses, explanations of nature, stories of love and adventure, and stories about great heroes, the Trojan war and the founding of Rome. The two sets are not designed to be sequential. Either may be used without prior use of the other. Fabulae Antiqui et Novi Mundi is still under revision. Only the first two units of it are currently available.

The following sample lessons are selected from the Teacher’s Guide, Marcus et Julia, and the Pupil Workbook, Look for the Latin Word. The lessons from the teacher’s guide illustrate what a teacher does from the introduction of a new Latin dialogue and new cultural information to the transfer of students’ newly acquired Latin vocabulary to English language skills. The lesson in the pupil workbook illustrates the types of reading and writing exercises in Latin and English that students complete after having demonstrated oral mastery of both Latin and English.
