New Student Mentors

Overview of program

The new student mentors work one on one with new students, present workshops to campus and community groups, publish an online newsletter for new students, and assist other departments with various activities to help make new students' adjustment to the College of Charleston easier.

2009-2010 New Student Mentors

The following students have been selected as mentors for the 2009-2010 school year.

Responsibilities of New Student Mentors

During the summer:

  • Assist with the provisional students during new student orientation

During the school year:

  • Write two articles per semester for The Growl- the online newsletter for new students
  • Plan and present workshops for students on topics regarding student success in college
  • Contact provisional student via email
  • Assist with the Center for Student Learning study skills workshops
  • Assist with events of the New Student programs office
  • Assist other departments with events
  • You will be required to attend meetings each semester to discuss provisional student issues and plan events.

Qualifications of New Student Mentors

  • Should be or have worked as an Office of New Student Programs Orientation Intern
  • Should have completed 30 semester hours
  • Should have a GPA of 2.5 or above
  • Should have up to 7 hours a month to commit to the program
  • Should be knowledgeable of the school
  • Should be willing to work with students on issues regarding the first year in College of Charleston in a caring and sensitive manner

Compensation

  • The New Student mentorship is a paid position. You will be expected to spend up to 7 hours a month in this position.

The Growl

The Growl is a newsletter designed to let new students know what's going on around campus and how to get involved. It includes important dates and deadlines. The Growl is written by upperclassmen, the New Student Mentors, who share their strategies for success and enjoying their time at the College.
