Mission Process

The School of Business & Economics’ mission statement was revised during the 2006/2007 academic year and passed by the faculty on February 13, 2007.  Dr. Tom Kent, Chair- Management & Entrepreneurship, headed the ad hoc committee to revise the mission and core values statements.  Focus groups comprised of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and our school’s Board of Governors were held throughout the fall semester to promote a transparent process for this revision.  The criteria used to develop the statement included the overall institutional mission and core values, strategic planning documents, AACSB and SACs accreditation guidelines, and vision discussions with our stakeholders.  The assurance of learning and assessment component was integrated into the process to facilitate the expectation of continuous evaluation and improvement of our educational programs.

The School of Business & Economics’ mission statement is visible in the College of Charleston undergraduate catalogue (both print and online versions) as well as on monitors in the Beatty Center Atrium. Students are made aware of our mission, core values, and learning goals and objectives during new student and transfer orientation sessions as well as when they apply for their major and admission to the school.

The School’s ten year strategic planning process is approaching completion during February/March 2009.  The mission revision process cycle begins again as Dr. Alan Shao will become the fourth Dean of the School of Business & Economics on March 15, 2009.  Discussions in this process began during the second strategic planning meeting conducted by Dr. Shao and strategic planning consultant, Diane Culhane, on February, 20, 2009.
