Student Demographics

The School of Business has 63 full-time faculty, 19 adjunct faculty, and 19 support staff. Our intended students are well rounded students who are effective problem solvers, committed to high professional standards, and prepared to succeed in a global business environment. As of spring 2009 the School of Business (SBE) had 957 majors and 734 pre-declared majors. Pre-declared students have not completed the admissions criteria but have indicated that they intend to pursue one of the majors in the SBE. The SBE also offers six minors that non-business administration majors may take. These include the following with the spring 2009 enrollments in parentheses: business administration (65), economics (29), finance (42), global logistics & transportation (3), hospitality & tourism management (36) and leadership change & social responsibility (0). There are seven concentrations that business administration majors can declare. These are as follows with the number of spring 2009 enrollments in parentheses: entrepreneurship (47), finance (96), global logistics & transportation (5), hospitality & tourism management (26), leadership change & social responsibility (24), marketing (145), and real estate (17).

Student Development Committee

As it becomes necessary, the SDC meets to study issues pertinent to our charges (see below) at the discretion of the SDC Chair. From time to time, the Dean's Office will request the SDC to study issues pertinent to its charges. While the SDC functions as a faculty committee, the SDC's role is to support the Dean's Office in its attempt to ensure that SBE students are properly recruited, supported and rewarded during their time at the College of Charleston.

Charges:

1. Monitors student recruitment, selection, and retention practices and outcomes

  • Have representative(s) from SDC at Major/Minor Fair(s) and encourage all departments to have representation at Major/Minor Fair(s)

  • Have representative(s) from SDC at SBE Open House events during the academic year
    • Contact: Rhonda Mack (Associate Dean - SBE)
  • Periodically review attrition/matriculation data for SBE students

2. Monitors policies and outcomes of academic advising and career planning

  • Promote the usage of Center for Student Learning Labs for Writing and Presentation skills to faculty and students in order to facilitate students' professional development o

  • Evaluate current standards for credits earned at institutions other than CofC and publicize transfer standards to all faculty/advisors
    • Contact: Brenda Dispenza (SBE Academic Advisor)
  • Evaluate current data regarding employment of recent graduates and develop methods to improve these data for purposes of making them public (to AACSB and for marketing purposes)

3. Evaluates applications for School student scholarships and internships

  • Work with all SBE departments to document "what constitutes an internship-for credit"
