Pre-Service Teacher Scholarship + Submit Online Application Applications due Friday 02.26.2010 South Carolina joins the Nation in an ever-increasing teacher shortage. Well-trained science and math teachers, in particular, are in extreme scarcity. SC Space Grant Consortium now offers a $3000 scholarship for students interested in becoming a middle or high school science, technology, engineering or mathematics teacher. Goal: To increase the number of quality teachers pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Objectives: 1) To enable and support future qualified middle and high school STEM teachers as they pursue their pre-service college training and in-service practicum. 2) To reward qualified STEM teachers in SC and encourage more to join the ranks. Application Requirements: In two pages or less provide a brief lesson plan related to one of NASA’s areas of research in STEM. Include: a) a general outline of how you would use the lesson, including intended age level; b) goals/results envisioned for students, c) suggested modifications or additions to the activity and d) ideas for evaluation; A brief description of your proposed use of the scholarship funds (1 page max) * SCSGC Pre-service Teacher’s Scholarship Program funds may be used for such expenses as: 1) reducing tuition burden; 2) covering travel and registration expenses for attending professional development workshops and training opportunities in STEM; 3) purchasing supplies for student teaching activities; or 4) other supportive activities that lead to the successful professional development and eventual graduation of the pre-service educator in SC; Include one recent copy of your college transcript(s); and Two letters of recommendation, including one from your faculty advisor. Eligibility: Students must: Be a citizen of the United States; Attend a consortium member institution; Have sponsorship from a faculty advisor; Be a rising sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student; Be working toward a teaching certificate in a science, technology, engineering or, mathematics (STEM) related field. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the basic sciences, science education, astronomy, planetary science, environmental studies, and engineering. Selection of Proposals: The awards are determined by the South Carolina Space Grant Consortium Director and SC Space Grant Consortium Campus Directors. Selection for the awards are based on: 1) the academic qualifications of the applicant, 2) two letters of recommendation, 3) an example lesson plan using one of NASA’s curriculum materials available via the world-wide-web (example sites below), 4) faculty sponsorship, and 5) a description of how the award funding will help you.
