Many sociologists are employed
in government jobs (federal, state and local). Here are but a few
examples of the many organizations that regularly employ sociologists in
a wide variety of jobs.
USAJOBS
- United States Office Of Personnel Management
The U.S. Government's official site for
jobs and employment information provided by the United States Office of
Personnel Management. This site offers both current job listings and an
on-line application.
U.S.
Census Bureau - Employment Opportunities
This page offers both national and regional
job listings with the U.S. Census Bureau. Careers listed as sociological
tend to be primarily statistical. For other types of jobs, check the management
and the miscellaneous listings.
Federal
Jobs Digest Home Page
This is a private page which is updated
daily. It provides a job matching service for a price and a listing of
benefits.
Free
Federal Job Search & Email Delivery System
This site can be searched manually or
the relevant listings can be e-mailed to you. If you don't have an e-mail
address, HRS will assign you a free mailbox. The listings are updated nightly.
Job
Search -- Jobs in Government
This is a great site if you're looking
for a job with city or county governments anywhere in the U.S. The listings
provide job qualification requirements, job descriptions, and salary information.
Links
to State Employment Services
The web page of every state and territory
of the U.S. is listed here. This is one of the better places to find state
employment opportunities. However, be aware that the state pages are individually
maintained, and some may be easier to search than others.
The Local
Government Home Page
Search this site by location rather than
by type of employment sought. The city and county pages are individually
maintained and can vary in accessibility.
Local Government
Institute
This site provides consolidated employment
listings for local governments all over the country. Unlike other local
links, LGI can be searched by job type and not just by location.
The Institute for Women's Policy Research is an example of a non-profit organization that posts job opening on its web page. Many non-profit organizations have web sites and post job openings.
This FAQ link at the Non-Profit Career Network answers frequently asked questions by job seekers who post their resume on the network.
In the private sector there
are essentially four different categories to search to find job opportunities.
The four categories include sociological associations, personnel, general
classifieds, and big corporations. The following links serve as examples
of the four categories.
The Snelling personnel placement agency has listings of various jobs in personnel. There is information on salaries, people to contact if interested in applying, and a description of duties for the job.
Sandy Nash Personnel also has listings of jobs available in personnel. The web page provides a description of the companies who are hiring, requirements for applying for the positions, and different branches of jobs in personnel.
Classifieds2000 provides information on jobs that are listed in the classifieds. This is a valuable resource because it provides a listing of job opportunities in various fields that may be of interest to college graduates.
Here is an example of a corporation in the private sector that lists job openings on their web site -- many coporations do. The web site contains information on job openings, descriptions of qualifications needed to apply, and different branches of the corporation.
