The Center for Expressive Culture is specially suited for multimedia project work. Sociology and Anthropology faculty can take advantage of a Video Archive Lab, smart classroom and mobile computing cart (Expressive Culture Lab/ECL) that offers Macintosh multimedia-production computers and a full range of software. Faculty have the opportunity to pursue classroom teaching, video production exercises, and post-production collaboration in their courses. The lab offers additional flexibility for group work with ample floor space, movable furniture, Internet access, audio and video recording equipment and a variety of musical instruments. Reservable cameras, microphones, lighting, and tripods can complement the use of the lab.

Making Changes in Software Applications Installed on Classroom/Lab Computers
Back to Top
Prior to the beginning of each semester at the College, Information Technology (IT) updates/adds software applications on the computers in smart classrooms, computer classrooms, and in the Library Student Computing Center. This service is designed to support the changing instructional needs of the faculty.
- Procedures
If you would like to request a change in the applications currently loaded on computers used by you or your students, you should:
- First, backup any existing documents/files you want to save. The process of "reimaging" (updating/adding new software applications) requires that the computer be wiped clean of any existing files/data. So that is why it is important to make a copy of any files you want to keep, before you proceed to the next step!
- Next, send a work order request to Helpdesk (helpdesk@cofc.edu) cc: Classroom Support (InstSoft@cofc.edu) with the following information:
- Name of contact person
- Name of the software package
- Software license and/or serial number
For installation of textbook software on multiple computers, check to see if you must obtain written permission from the Publisher. This will be stated on the license. We can not proceed without this documentation.
- Software location
On the web - Include the link in your work order request OR On a CD - Submit a COPY of the original software media installation disk to Ray Creede or Goffery Davis 335 JC Long Bldg. IT will retain this copy for maintenance and future installation requests.
- Location of the installation (room # of classroom/lab)
- Date the software is needed (if other than the beginning of the semester). Requests submitted after the deadline will be placed in a queue and processed accordingly.
- Any additional information that you believe is pertinent to the installation.
- Deadlines
To assure installation of software for the beginning of a semester, the deadlines are:
Spring -
Request Must Be Received by December 22
Summer Sessions-
Request Must Be Received by April 30, 2010
Fall-
Request Must Be Received by July 1

Wireless Access
The Center for Expressive Culture is connected to the campuswide wireless network. Students, faculty, and staff connect to the network using their Cougars username and password. The Mac Mobile Learning Cart is configured to automatically connect to the wireless network on boot up. Students will need to use their Cougars (Edisto Email) username and password to connect to the wireless network on the Macbooks.
If other devices need to be set up to use the wireless network, please see the tutorials below:

Mac Mobile Learning Cart
The Center is equipped with a mobile learning cart, which contains 15 dual-boot (Windows and Macintosh) computers with USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 ports, and double-layer DVD burners. The Macbooks run OS X natively, and Windows XP via Parallels software. These computers have access to general computing software and a variety of programs for editing audio, video and images, authoring DVDs, and publishing multimedia projects.
The Macbooks are not available for checkout and must remain in the lab.
Misc. Cables, Adaptors, and Card Readers (Stored in the Mobile Cart)
- Canon Powershot A570 Digital Camera USB Cable (3 Total)
- Flip Camera 3 Prong RCA Cable (3 Total)
- Macbook VGA Adaptors (2 Total)
- iPod RCA Adaptors (2 Total)
- Universal Power Adaptor: 9 Adaptors, 1 AC adaptor input, 1 AC adaptor output/ converter, stored in 2 bags
- Universal Media Card Reader 1
15 MyBook External USB Drives are available for use in the lab. They are labeled with corresponding numbers that match the MacBooks. Each drive comes with a USB cable and a power adaptor. The drives are Mac formatted as a HFS Journaled drive. DATA IS NOT VIEWABLE ON A PC.
iMovie Projects will run into a file transfer size limit of 4GB per single file if a drive is formated for Windows/FAT32. Most video projects WILL have at least one file that is over 4GB!
Moving LARGE video files between an PC and a Mac is NOT RECOMENDED without prior planning!
- DRIVE FACTS
- MAC drives use HFS+ file system = permits file sizes in excess of 4GB, are not viewable on a PC
- PCs use NTFS for file sizes > 4Gb. The Catch? An NTFS HD is read only when
plugged into a Mac. (You can drag files from it to your Mac but you CAN NOT drag them back or edit them on the drive)
- FAT 32 is compatible for both PCs and MACs as long as the files are NOT >4GB
If you need to work with large video files that need to be transported between MAC and PC you can request network space from Information Technology or purchase and install additional applications that will allow you to see both formats.

Lab Equipment Checkout Policy for Students
Back to Top
The Expressive Culture Lab/Department of Sociology & Anthropology loans media equipment kits to actively enrolled College of Charleston students for academic-related projects (i.e. course assignments, research). The following is a general explanation of the Expressive Culture Lab’s loan policy which serves to minimize the liabilities associated with such loans.
The Center for Expressive Culture reserves the right to update the policy as deemed necessary and appropriate.
Borrowers
Media equipment loans are only available to current College of Charleston students in good standing, with a valid College ID. Borrower names and College ID numbers will be kept on file throughout the semester.
A Loan Application Form (pdf), signed by the student and a College of Charleston Sociology & Anthropology faculty member, is required before any loans can be made to the student. This form will also be kept on file throughout the semester.
Expressive Culture Lab media equipment is strictly for academic use (i.e. course-related assignments/projects, research) and not for extracurricular activities beyond the scope of the course curriculum.
Each loan is processed per equipment kit and made on the basis that the student has no equipment currently on loan. Only one type of equipment will be loaned out per student at one time.
The Loan Process
Equipment kits are checked out on a first-come, first-served basis. Equipment may be re-checked, depending on availability and demand.
All equipment will be inspected by the faculty or staff member in attendance to ensure proper functionality prior to the release, and upon the return, of all equipment.
The equipment kit check-out/check-in process will take approximately fifteen minutes, perhaps more. Students are urged to plan accordingly.
The Expressive Culture Lab reserves the right to recall equipment for any cause.
Loan Period
Equipment kits are available for checkout for a one week period. Checkouts may be extended on a per week basis with your instructor’s permission, depending on reservations and the needs of other users.
There is no charge for equipment loans. There are, however, fees assessed if the equipment is not returned. Students should be aware of these fees when checking out equipment.
Liability
In the event of theft, loss or damage, the student is fully responsible for all costs associated with the repair or replacement of the media equipment and any software/accessories included in the kit. Please verify that all “kit” components are accounted for and in working condition.
The repair/replacement costs will vary depending on the media equipment. Exact costs will depend on the cost of replacement of the equipment, as decided by the Department of Sociology & Anthropology. For some equipment this may be several hundred dollars.
All equipment checked out to a student must be turned in at end of the term, otherwise final grades will be withheld.
All files or programs which are not the property of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology are deleted as part of the equipment maintenance process.
The Video Archive Lab is fully equipped for digital video editing using a Mac G5, media converter, vcr/dvd combo player, digital camcorder and iMovie HD software. Users can scan slides, negatives, photos, and documents using the HP batch scanner. In addition to this equipment, there is also a stand-alone VHS to VHS and VHS to DVD duplicating station.
The Sociology/Anthropology Video Archive Lab was made possible by a private donation given to the department in honor of Dr. John Rashford. The lab has been in operation since March 2004.
