Swine Flu

As you know there is an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico with cases reported in the US and Canada. To date, there have been reported cases in South Carolina. The current WHO level is at a Level 5 which indicates pandemic influenza is imminent. Travel advisories have been issued. There is currently no vaccine available for this new virus, however, the virus does respond to two of the antiviral medications currently available, including Tamiflu.

The medical staff at Student Health Services as well as the Emergency Management Team and the Senior Staff are carefully monitoring the situation and will make recommendations based on information from our local health department, the CDC and the WHO. An excellent source of information can be found at the following website: www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy:
There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid handshaking and close contact
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.:

  • Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Symptoms of the Flu:

  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Nausea, vomiting & diarrhea
