And finally, a heartiest WELL DONE to Barney Vaughan, upon the attainment of the rank of DISTINGUISHED TOASTMASTER, the highest rank and most significant award in Toastmasters. Barney was a Sponsor for our Club two years ago and has been a very loyal and highly supportive member ever since. His most recent major contribution has been conducting a Youth Leadership Program.
50 Fifth Graders Complete Youth Leadership Program
The College of Charleston Toastmasters completed what is believed to be a landmark Youth Leadership Program for all of Toastmasters!
Four sections of about a dozen 5th grade students each, completed a formal ten week Youth Leadership Program at The Buist Magnet School on Calhoun Street. After an initial introduction to the importance of effective communications, the students practiced and groomed their communications and leadership skills for eight weeks. Finally, at the pot-luck banquet, they demonstrated these skills to a packed house of about 60 people each night on April 1 and 2. The program was conducted entirely by the students with the exception of program explanation and guest introduction.
The most meaningful response to the Youth Leadership Program was that every one of the students had so much fun that they each said:
"I'd do it again, starting tomorrow!"
What a GREAT testimonial for Toastmasters!
The coordinators for the program were Bill Anderson ATM-B, Larry Fulton DTM, Clarence Matthews DTM, and Barney Vaughan DTM. We were also honored to have our District Governor, Curtis Yant DTM, attend one of the banquets!
College of Charleston Toastmasters Club Web Page!
Come check us out! Brand new page, brand new look. We're at:
http://spinner.cofc.edu/~tmasters/
You'll find some very interesting threads there! Including one for the Youth Leadership Program. We believe we have the only Web site in America for a Youth Leadership Class, and are absolutely certain it must be the only such for 5th graders! ((GRIN))
Upcoming Elections
If you'd like to take greater advantage of the leadership opportunities that Toastmasters offers, consider running for an elected position for the next term. The duration is only 6 months, from July through December. You'll be involved in some very interesting projects, work with some truly neat people, and get a wonderful sense of satisfaction for carrying on the important work of our Club.
